SAT 07:00 Neil Gaiman and Dirk Maggs in Conversation (b04vj1f2)
The best-selling author Neil Gaiman and the revered producer Dirk Maggs go back a long way, but they only actually met in person much later in life.

Their friendship began during the early days of email when, in 1992, Dirk wrote to Neil asking if he could turn Gaiman's 'The Sandman' comic series into a radio play.

Sadly that project didn't happen, but it was the beginning of a long friendship, which led to their working together on the hugely successful 2013 radio drama Neverwhere and on BBC Radio 4's adaptation of Good Omens, the cult classic written by Neil and Sir Terry Pratchett.

Recorded after the read through of Good Omens - ahead of recording.

SAT 10:00 Charles Parker Prize (m001p6r9)
2023

Sara Parker introduces a new generation of student features makers, all winners and finalists of the Charles Parker Prize 2023 – set up in memory of her father.

The annual Charles Parker Prize celebrates a new generation of audio producers and storytellers - open to anyone studying radio and audio at Higher or Further Education establishments across the U.K.

Broadcast through the 1950s and 60s, along with Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger, Charles Parker's series known as the 'Radio Ballads' arguably left a lasting legacy on the landscape of radio storytelling; by interweaving original musical composition with remote interview recordings, and with a focus on highlighting working class voices - a practice until then unheard on BBC radio.

Charles’ daughter Sara Parker, herself an award-winning radio producer, hears this year's very best features; woven between highlights from their features, our ten new storytellers share their experience and journey creating their prize-winning work.

An “expertly montaged” undersea dive exploring how man-made sounds threaten underwater ecologies; the “delicate and mysterious” unveiling of a serial womaniser and his hitherto undiscovered children; the “beautiful and evocative” ode to the Irish language and its ‘life force’; an “engrossing and touching” investigation into the declining numbers of wild house martins; and a startlingly vivid and intimate depiction of two siblings’ relationship with their abusive late father that judges agreed was both “captivating and horrifying”.

There are extracts from the prize-winning features of; Thea Rickard, Dom Brown, Christina Hardinge, George Ruskin, and Lottie Steele, as well as five of our finalists; Kieran Davis, Petra Jones, Lydia Kenny, Matthew Temporal, and Alice Whalley.

You can hear the five winners’ work in full in the series ‘New Storytellers’ on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds.

Producer: Jay Sykes

SUN 06:00 Poetry Extra (m001p7c5)
Poetry Workshop - Night Photograph by Lavinia Greenlaw

Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Poetry Workshop - Night Photograph by Lavinia Greenlaw.

Ruth Padel meets poets from East Suffolk to work on some poems in progress. Testing and revising as they go, in a spirit of supportive criticism. Tough love for poems.

Poetry Workshops are gathering all over the country. In the back rooms of pubs, in libraries and in front rooms, poets meet to hone their craft and sharpen their verse.

Ruth and the group work on three very different poems on the theme of 'darkness' - poems that evoke mystery, longing and sadness. In the process they consider the pros and cons of abstractions and the effective use of titles in a poem. The group are ruthless yet supportive as they chuck out words and redraft; listening, pruning and testing their work as they go.

The group discuss the techniques, inspiration, wordplay and imagination that make poetry so enjoyable and rewarding. As well as working on their own poems, the group consider a poem by Lavinia Greenlaw called 'Night Photograph.'

Producer: Sarah Langan

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2012.

SUN 06:30 Je T'Aime: The legendary love story of Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg (Omnibus) (m0002rhv)
Gainsbourg and Birkin were arguably France’s most iconic couple - synonyms for love, glamour, eroticism, poetry and provocation.

They met in 1968. She, an English aristocrat just arrived in Paris from Swinging London. He, the son of Russian immigrants, already the author of Le Poinçonneur des Lilas and La Javanaise and emotionally wrecked by his breakup with Brigitte Bardot.

Their love story set Paris aflame as the 1960s ebbed, and set in motion many of the ideas we have by now come to think of as specifically French.

Skipping back and forth in time, Je T’Aime takes the listener from the foggy Normandy landscapes where Serge and Jane retreated, to their carefree summers on the coast. En route to superstardom in films and music, we experience their intrigues, triangular relationships and jealous rages, the genius and the self-torture.

Jane Birkin died aged 76 in July 2023. Serge Gainsbourg was 62 when he died in 1991.

Le Monde Journalist and acclaimed author Véronique Mortaigne talked to the pair’s friends, family and colleagues to cast new light on these two massive personalities, who together created a model of the rebel couple for the ages.

Véronique has been head of music and arts at Le Monde and is the author of a dozen books, including biographies of Cesaria Evora, Manu Chao, and Johnny Halliday.

Recently Steve has also found success in films, but is best known for the comic monster he created - Alan Partridge.

John Maynard Keynes

The premier comedy-economics hybrid is tackling the big, competing theories of Macro Economics.

These are little short of religions to their proponents, and the figures who devised them dominate the intellectual landscape in a way that mere politicians can only dream of. These are the Big Beards, the Glinting Eyes, the Bristling Moustaches and Eyebrows of "Worldly Philosophy" and their insights, calculations and hallucinations remain as contentious today as they were when first inked into place.

In this series Simon Evans, with the help of Undercover Economist, Tim Harford will advance through the modern industrial era using three great beacons as their guide - Adam Smith, Karl Marx and John Maynard Keynes - and reflect on how they continue to shape our world today.

In this episode, the spotlight shines on John Maynard Keynes, a figure whose analysis and suggested solutions for the West's economic woes are still argued over as heatedly in Westminster and Washington as if they had been published just last week.

Keynes was an extraordinary figure, not only an economic visionary but that rarest of things, one who put his money where his mouth was, and to great effect - his canny investments kept the entire Bloomsbury group afloat and in crayons, though we needn't hold that against him.

Presenters: Simon Evans and Tim Harford

Put To The Test

True stories told live in the USA: Meg Bowles introduces stories of testing one's own limitations and discovering new wells of strength and resolve.

The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room,

The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.

The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.

Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.

The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

First heard on PRX in the USA in 2020.

Angélique Kidjo (the A-Side)

Angélique Kidjo, the "Queen of African music" discusses her 1994 breakthrough album, 'Ayé'.

Series in which leading performers and songwriters talk about the album that made them or changed them.

Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios, each edition includes two episodes - the A-side and B-side.

In the A-side, the Grammy nominated singer-songwriter and activist from Benin talks to John Wilson.

She also performs exclusive versions of key tracks, including "Agolo," "Adouma" and "Djan-Djan".

The album has been described as "a spellbinding one-world statement" where "Kidjo treats her voice like it's a percussion instrument".

One of ten children, Angélique Kidjo grew up in Benin in West Africa. But in the 1980s she moved to Paris to escape the communist regime and began synthesising the music of her native country with rock, funk, electronica and Euro-pop.

Kidjo has collaborated with artists as diverse as Alicia Keys, Philip Glass, the Kronos Quartet and Peter Gabriel and been declared as the "the undisputed Queen of African Music." Her albums regularly top the World Albums Charts and her gift is said to be "to pour what could so easily be anger and frustration into songs that uplift and inspire us."

In the B-side of the programme, it's the turn of the audience to ask the questions.

I Wouldn't Say No

Henry’s sister Gwen is recuperating at Sizzlinghurst after a major operation. She is very religious and Vera is influenced by this, to Henry’s atheistical disgust. Vera also has a fleeting longing for a third child and promises Henry that she will never kiss another woman again in her life, if he will just agree to make one with her.

So Ginny's new idea, inspired by Aristophanes and Lysistrata, that the women of Britain must stop the looming war by refusing to sleep with their husbands comes at a tricky time.

Meanwhile, Lionel goes to Westminster to meet Henry and hear a debate. He meets - and is slightly smitten by - Nancy Astor. Churchill advises Henry to take Vera to Paris for a fling before the war starts. And Gwen, curious about same-sex relationships, asks Vera for a kiss.

It's not long before they both regret it.

Charles Parker: Radio Pioneer

Sean Street delves into the archive of one of the most innovative and controversial BBC radio producers, reviewing Charles Parker’s work from the Radio Ballads to his sacking in 1972.

Parker was born in Bournemouth on April 5th 1919 – the son of a redundant railway clerk who sold paraffin from a handcart – and died in 1980 on the same day as John Lennon. For a man who revolutionised radio production, who is still talked about and revered today, his death was hardly reported in the press.

He is probably best known for his series of eight radio ballads made with Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger. These programmes became a high point in radio production but they eventually became expensive luxuries that could no longer be afforded. He was "sacked" or "left" the BBC in 1972.

Bournemouth University’s Emeritus Professor of Radio, Sean Street, reviews the life of an icon in the radio industry who, according to fellow producer Michael Mason, was "a real creative genius… his razor blade was like a sculptor’s chisel, releasing the hidden poets in people". Talking to family, friends and those who worked with Charles Parker, Sean explores his radio productions and ideas on preserving the oral tradition as he delves into a rich archive of material - creating a portrait of a master magician in radio.

Parker’s life was also a journey from poverty to Cambridge University, from a Conservative Christian to a Socialist, from a Submarine Commander to a Radio Producer. But throughout his career, two things remained constant - his dedication, often working for days without sleep, and most importantly his desire to tell the extraordinary stories of ordinary people in their own words.

Producer: Andy Cartwright

A Soundscape production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in 2019.

WED 21:00 What's Funny About ... (m000j35w)
Series 1

The Vicar Of Dibley

TV veterans Peter Fincham and Jon Plowman talk to the writers, producers and performers behind Britain’s biggest TV comedy hits, and hear the inside story of how they brought their programmes to the screen.

In this episode, Peter and Jon talk to Dawn French and Richard Curtis about their much-loved sitcom The Vicar of Dibley. They discuss how to make a fundamentally nice character funny, Richard’s curious appetite for writing quite so many weddings, and Dawn’s strangest ever Vicar of Dibley gig.

With Peter and Jon as our guides, we’ll take the opportunity to ask quite how they went about making a great bit of TV comedy. Who came up with it? How did it get written?

Plus, backstage secrets straight from the horse’s mouth, with the unvarnished truth from the people who were there, and who put these iconic shows on the telly.

Producer: Owen Braben

Made for BBC Radio 4 Extra by Expectation Productions, and first broadcast in May 2020.

Series 1

Absolutely Fabulous

TV veterans Peter Fincham and Jon Plowman talk to the writers, producers, and performers behind Britain’s biggest TV comedy hits, and hear the inside story of how they brought their programmes to the screen.

In this episode, Peter and Jon talk to Jennifer Saunders about her BAFTA and Emmy award winning hit Absolutely Fabulous. They discuss the inspiration for Edina Monsoon, why recordings of the show were always finished by 9.30 pm (clue: the BBC bar closed at 10), and what might charitably be described as Jennifer’s “last minute” approach to script delivery!

With Peter and Jon as our guides, we’ll take the opportunity to ask quite how our guests went about making a great bit of TV comedy. Who came up with it? How did it get written? We’ll talk about the commissioning, the casting, and the reception the show received when it first aired.

We’ll do our very best to winkle out some backstage secrets straight from the horse’s mouth, as we hear the unvarnished truth from the people who were there, and who put these iconic shows on the telly.

Original Absolutely Fabulous clips written by Jennifer Saunders

Based on an original idea by Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders

Producer: Owen Braben

Made for BBC Radio 4 Extra by Expectation Productions, and first broadcast in May 2020.

FRI 20:00 Dance Your Life Away (b0741lvd)
The story of contemporary community dance in Oxford, and the extraordinary woman who launched it thirty years ago.

Cecilia Macfarlane believes that we are all dancers from the cradle to the grave. More than that, really: she thinks that we dance from our first kick in the womb to our very last blink - and, perhaps, beyond.

At her convent school in Bath, when she declared that she was going to be a dancer, the Head Mistress told Cecilia: "Go dance your life away!".

When she came to Oxford as a young mother, she found only ballet was available for children, and started up Oxford Youth Dance for her own son and daughter. Thirty years on, Oxford - a city better known for more prestigious art-forms - has the longest-running and perhaps most vibrant community dance scene in the country.

You can be two or 92, in a wheelchair or able-bodied, a middle-aged office worker or a young man planning a professional careeer in dance - in Oxford, you really can "dance your life away".

Presented and produced by Beaty Rubens.

FRI 21:00 What's Funny About ... (m000jq99)
Series 1

Blackadder

TV veterans Peter Fincham and Jon Plowman talk to the writers, producers, and performers behind Britain’s biggest TV comedy hits, and hear the inside story of how they brought their programmes to the screen.

In this episode, Peter and Jon talk to John Lloyd and Sir Tony Robinson about the modern comedy masterpiece that is Blackadder. They discuss the endless problems they had when making the first series ("the show that looked a million dollars and cost a million pounds”), and the importance of failure. They also open up about the tensions amongst the team, the “ladder of stupidity” in Blackadder’s world, and the real story behind that famous final scene.

With Peter and Jon as our guides, we’ll take the opportunity to ask quite how they went about making a great bit of TV comedy. Who came up with it? How did it get written? We’ll talk about the commissioning, the casting, and the reception the show received when it first aired.

We’ll do our very best to winkle out some backstage secrets straight from the horse’s mouth, as we hear the unvarnished truth from the people who were there, and who put these iconic shows on the telly.

Original Blackadder clips written by Richard Curtis and Ben Elton

Producer: Owen Braben

Made for BBC Radio 4 Extra by Expectation Productions, and first broadcast in June 2020.

FRI 22:00 Alexei Sayle's Strangers on a Train (m001p6nc)
Series 2

Cheltenham to Maesteg

Comedy icon Alexei Sayle continues his series of rail journeys across the country with a trip from the regency elegance of Cheltenham to Maesteg, deep in the heart of the former mining communities of South Wales.

Alexei’s mission is to break the golden rule of travelling by train and actually talk to his fellow passengers, in a quest for conversations with strangers that will reveal their lives, hopes, dreams and destinations.

Along the way, Alexei holds a finger into the wind of the thoughts and moods of the great British travelling public. There’s humour, sadness and surprise as people reveal what is going on in their lives and, as Alexei passes through familiar towns and cities, he also delves into his own personal stories of a childhood in Liverpool and a long career as a comedian, actor and author.

Alexei has a life-long ticket to ride in his DNA, as his father was a railway guard. As a child, Alexei travelled on trains with his mum and dad, not only in the UK but also abroad. While other children in Liverpool at the time thought a trip to Blackpool was a big adventure, Alexei travelled to Paris, experienced the Orient Express, had summer holidays in Czechoslovakia and visited mysterious cities with unpronounceable names in the farthest corners of Europe.

In this programme, Alexei meets hospital worker Kevin who, on his days off, takes pot luck at his local train station ticket office and simply asks for a trip to somewhere interesting. Jenny tells Alexei how her years in the middle east changed her life, Donna and Paul take Alexei into the addictive world of murder mystery weekends, Ruth tells of her memories of her childhood in a mining community, and Julie and David describe to Alexei how, for nearly 50 years, they have run a general store in the Welsh valleys - now the only shop left in the village.

A Ride production for BBC Radio 4

FRI 22:30 Sarah Kendall: Australian Trilogy (b08g5h2g)
Series 1

A Day in October

"This show is a story about a day in October in 1990, when I saw a miracle happen to a boy, and his name was George Peach..."

The story of Sarah's secret relationship with bullied classmate, George Peach. Following an accident at the beach, George Peach died for exactly 11 seconds. Sarah's story examines the remarkable effect those eleven seconds had on Sarah and her schoolmates. The show plays with the relationship between fiction and real-life and explores the redemptive power of storytelling.

A Day in October won the 2018 Writers' Guild Award the Audio Drama Award for best comedy production.

Taking her audience on a trip, Sarah gives a unique snapshot of small-town life in Australia in the early 90s . At a time when most people were seeing Australians through the filter of 'Home and Away' and 'Neighbours', Sarah's shows present a darker underbelly to the stereotype of the sun-loving, happy-go-lucky Aussie teenager.

Written and performed by Sarah Kendall

Producer: Carl Cooper

A BBC Studios production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in February 2017.

This week he's reclaiming the toothbrush moustache on behalf of comedy - taking it back from Hitler to give to it's rightful owner Charlie Chaplin.

Based on his Edinburgh show Richard examines why a particular piece of facial hair can evoke revulsion in all who see it when in fact the person first associated with it was one of the funniest people on the planet.

He grows his own toothbrush moustache and hears what passers by make of it, talks to a German moustache expert about Hitler's vanity and describes how wearing it on the day after the BNP won seats in the last European election strengthened his resolve to continue his campaign. The show was recorded in front of an audience.
