These brilliant women are the central figures of Michelle Dean's book, which builds a picture of the social and political progress of women through the 20th century.

They are united by their 'sharpness', the ability to cut to the quick with precision of thought and wit.

The world would not have been the same without Dorothy Parker’s acid reflections on the absurdities of her life. Or Mary McCarthy’s fiction which is noted for its acerbity in analysing the finer nuances of intellectual dilemmas. Or Susan Sontag’s ideas about interpretation, or Pauline Kael’s energetic swipes at filmmakers. Or Nora Ephron’s biting wit and strong female characters.

Together they define the cultural and intellectual history of 20th century America.

SUN 06:00 Poetry Extra (m001hdz9)
Charlotte Mew - The Heart of Hidden Things

Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Charlotte Mew - The Heart of Hidden Things.

Julia Copus explores the poetry and life of the only born and bred Bloomsbury poet.

Thomas Hardy wrote that Charlotte Mew was "Far and away the best living woman poet - who will be remembered when others are forgotten." Siegfried Sassoon said that she was "the only poet who can give me a lump in my throat," while Virginia Woolf called her "the greatest living poetess".

Although she lived in Bloomsbury all her life, she was never part of the Bloomsbury set and, when Charlotte Mew died in 1928 aged 59, a small notice in a London paper described her simply as "Charlotte Mary New, 53" - the name and the age both wrong.

But to those who knew her, Charlotte Mew was a compelling, at times mischievous and groundbreaking poet, whose writing was full of sea-breezes, lamp-lit streets, human voices, and the sudden stark contrasts between sound and silence, between life and death.

Her dramatic monologue The Farmer's Bride caused a sensation in literary circles when it was published in 1912, dramatising the terrifying story of a young woman trapped in a powerless arranged marriage, who is literally locked away.

Julia explores how Charlotte Mew broke the mould of contemporary styles in the early 20th century and created a unique poetic voice.

Series 1

Episode 1

Karen House-Water visits Dr Berry to treat her fear of water, and finds that the cure can sometimes be worse than the disease - via mermaids, the titanic, and talking dolphins.

A dark, David Lynch-ian comedy, ideally suited for an unsettling and surreal late night listen. Matt Berry (The IT Crowd, Garth Marenghi's Dark Place, Snuff Box) plays a corrupt and bizarre hypnotherapist taking unsuspecting clients on twisted, misleading journeys through their subconscious.

Each episode sees the doctor dealing with a different client who has come to him for a different problem (quitting smoking, fear of water, etc). As the patient is put under hypnosis, we 'enter' their mind, and all the various situations the hypnotherapist takes them through are played out for us to hear. The result is a dream- (or nightmare-) like trip through the patient's mind, as funny as it is disturbing.

Dr. Berry ...... Matt Berry
Karen House-Water ...... Katharine Parkinson

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 2012.

Episode 1

Over the last few years, if a celebrity has ever said or done anything remotely controversial, then they've probably been cancelled. Largely performed through social media, some describe it as necessary evil to help democratise the internet and reflect the expectancy of an artist’s audience, for others it’s just a chance to shut up gobby celebs!

Whatever your view, it certainly helps empower fans by diminishing celebrity cultural capital and helping keep their egos and opinions in check. It's a growing phenomenon that's left almost no one unscathed, from comedians and actors to musicians and TV hosts. It’s also happening to the not so famous - remember the cat bin lady?

With stand up and sketch comedy, Athena explores cancel culture and the world of offence in modern times. Over four episodes, Athena will help explain the phenomenon of cancel culture among celebrities, look at the history of offence, and offer up some cancel rules for guidance. Athena then puts all that cancel knowledge to the test on her own social media activity from 10 years ago. There’s just no escape from cancel culture justice, even for Athena!

Written and performed by Athena Kugblenu.

Produced by Gus Beattie.

A novel from Barbara Kingsolver, bestselling author of The Poisonwood Bible, The Lacuna and Flight Behaviour, interweaves the past and the present to explore the human capacity for resilience and compassion in times of great upheaval. FRI 07:15 Curtain Down at Her Majesty's - A Play in Five Acts (m0001w37)
Act V: Rest in Peace

Michael Chaplin’s five-part drama about the death of Queen Victoria.

For two weeks the nation stopped in its tracks, mesmerised by the mortality of a little old lady who had sat on the throne for over sixty years. Her children squabbled, her doctors quarrelled, her army bickered and the public were misled and kept in the dark. This is the remarkable story of Queen Victoria's final days and the chaos and confusion surrounding her funeral, told by those who were there.

Not many get this close to history.

A full military state funeral almost ends in disaster as the Queen’s coffin topples on the gun carriage and a royal tradition is born.

Based on the book Curtain Down at Her Majesty’s, an eyewitness history by Stewart Richards.
