SAT 02:00 Buzz by Dr Thor Hanson (b0b8gx0f)
Episode 5
California’s Central Valley produces 81% of the world’s annual almond harvest.
There’s a problem though - the method of harvesting eliminates bees from the orchards.
Bees are like oxygen - ubiquitous, essential and, for the most part, unseen. While we might overlook them, they lie at the heart of relationships that bind the human and natural worlds. Dr Thor Hanson concludes the journey that began 125 million years ago, when a wasp first dared to feed pollen to its young.
From honeybees and bumbles to lesser-known diggers, miners, leafcutters, and masons, bees have long been central to our harvests, our mythologies, and our very existence. They have given us sweetness and light, the beauty of flowers and as much as a third of the foodstuffs we eat. And, alarmingly, they are at risk of disappearing.

SAT 02:15 Lavinia Greenlaw - Five Fever Tales (b03yqwhg)
5. Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up One's Sleeve
A drama serial by Lavinia Greenlaw about one of the oldest of human diseases.
Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up One's Sleeve: the old ones are (still) sometimes the best.
Malaria has blighted human life in parts of the world for as long as humans have been humans. The mosquito, the parasite it carries, and the human bloodstream are evolving together. In many places the parasite still has the upper hand. Emergency Prescriptions Kept up One's Sleeve: the last of five dramas based on facts and taking in ancient historical itches and ideas about the disease and the latest scientific attempts to understand and outwit it.
The disease caused by a parasite carried in the saliva of female mosquitoes came to humans probably from gorillas a long time ago. Through recorded history the fever-prompting disease has shadowed humans almost everywhere warm enough for mosquitoes to live between the Poles. We have evolved together. It is still the biggest killer of children in parts of the world.

SAT 02:30 The Business of Film with Mark Kermode (b054pbwz)
The Business of Showing
Mark Kermode considers the business of showing films in the last of three programmes.
The route from script to finance to screen can be a long one - but then it all comes down to one nervous opening weekend.
Marketing may convince us of a film's merit but, one comment on social media can ruin even the most inventive campaign.
Film festivals are vital for launching a film. The Autumn festival season is where artistic creators battle for the first showing of the most talked about films. For many independent film makers exposure through awards is seen as a crucial - or perhaps only - means of survival. The artistic director of the Toronto Film festival reveals how film makers plead with him to admit their films.
The decline in DVD sales has led to nearly a halving of studio profits. Vincent Bruzzese runs a research entertainment firm and believes there is a disconnect between the film makers and the audience. By analysing data, it's possible to work out why a certain scene works. Hit on certain story tropes and a film will do well.
Netflix and Amazon's are all about giving customers what they want. Their algorithms are set to challenge the studios' dominance. How long is it until the streaming services become major studios themselves?
Meanwhile, the growth of cinema multiplexes have paved the way for boutique cinemas and the notion of the film as an event. Audiences today are engaging with films in very different ways, so how do UK cinemas make most of their money?

Can holiday romances ever work out – even ones in Switzerland? All these subjects have been sent in by our listeners and are given the Marian and Tara treatment in the latest instalment of their popular advice podcast.

Voice in the Machine
Talking technology has surrounded us for over half a century.
From the earliest incarnation of the Speaking Clock to the artificially intelligent personal assistants in our homes, we've slowly got used to sharing our lives with machines that help us with our daily chores.
Who better to guide us through the history of the Voice in the Machine than two of the nation's most familiar voices?
Jon Briggs was the original voice of Siri in the UK - a fact he only discovered while watching a feature on the TV. Emma Hignett's voice is heard on London’s buses and trains, helping people to navigate the capital. Spending the day in a smart home, the duo ask the robo-vacuum to clean the floor, request songs and jokes from personal assistant Alexa, and hop channels with a talking television.
While travelling on a bus and hearing her own voice, Emma shares her own recording tips and tricks. A visit to the local supermarket leads to an encounter with perhaps the most irritating machine voice of all time, with repeated warnings of an "unexpected item in bagging area". As these recognisable voices dig deeper into our history with talking tech, Jon gets a little nostalgic with his own fondness for Knight Rider's talking car, KITT.
Rifling through the archives, Jon and Emma reminisce about their memories of talkative gadgets from fact, fiction and music. In the context of the early archival recordings of talking technology, the voices of today's OK Google, Alexa, Siri and others have come a long way.
But why are our assistants almost all female?
And are they really listening to us all the time?
Join Jon and Emma as they grapple with these questions and their personal connection to the silicon speech that narrates our lives.

Forever and Ever
True stories told live in the USA: Meg Bowles introduces tales of things past shaping the here and now.
The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.
The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.
Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.
The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.
First heard on PRX in 2019.

Between the Ears - The In-Between Land
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and chooses The In-Between Land featuring deaf shepherd-poet Josephine Dickinson.
The magical North Pennines landscape inspires Josephine's life and work - and is the fertile backdrop to her real and imagined sound world.
Welcome to her remote hill farm near Alston – near the highest market town in England – where Josephine looks after her sheep and writes her poetry. It’s her in-between land, a place between hearing and deafness, art and reality, home and you listening to the programme.
It’s a challenging environment, too: in 2018 the ‘Beast from the East’ cut the local community off and emergency aid had to be airlifted in by Chinook helicopter, but in the spring the wildflower meadows are alive to the sound of curlews, lambs and bumble bees.
This peat landscape is ever-present in her life and increasingly a source of inspiration for her environmentalism. Born in London, Josephine moved here in 1994 and fell in love with the moors - and with Douglas, an elderly sheep farmer who took her under his wing and married her. Josephine’s deafness started at the age of six, but hearing aids enabled her to pursue her love of music, and she taught piano and worked as an arts development worker at the South Bank.
But seven years ago she lost her hearing completely, plunging her into a hallucinatory inner soundscape that tormented and fascinated her in equal measure. She can now hear her lambs and the wind in the cotton grass, thanks to a cochlear implant.
In collaboration with BBC Radio 3 and sonic artist Andrew Deakin - from Full of Noises, based in Barrow - Josephine invited local people to share her Ark of Sound in Alston Parish Church, a powerful sound installation demonstrating that a deaf person doesn’t live in a silent world.
A BBC Radio Cumbria production by Andrew Carter.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in December 2018.

Adrian Mole is asked to write a book. Meanwhile, Pandora calls a family summit meeting. Read by Harry McEntire.
Omnibus of the last five of 10 parts abridged by Sara Davies.
This diary starts in April 1997. Adrian is no longer a spotty teenager, but a balding 30 year old, recently separated from Jo Jo, the mother of his 2 year old son, William.
On the eve of the General Election, Adrian returns home to Ashby-de-la-Zouch to vote for his local Labour Party candidate, and childhood sweetheart, Pandora Braithwaite. He is working as Head Chef in a restaurant in Soho, where there is tinned tomato soup on the ‘traditional English, no choice’ menu.
Adrian’s literary ambitions remain unrealised, but his career is about to take an unexpected turn and throw him into the limelight. And that is not the only life-changing surprise in store for the hapless yet irrepressible diarist.
The Cappuccino Years highlights how much attitudes have changed over the years, and once again showcases Sue Townsend’s fearless and razor-sharp wit.

With a guitar in hand, harmonica in mouth, cymbals and bells and a big drum strapped to the back, Tom Ravenscroft goes in search of the musical characters who prefer to go solo.
One Man Bands have a surprisingly long history, documented in pictures and writings from France and Spain as far back as the middle ages.
Entertaining and enterprising men, they started with a flute and a drum and, over the centuries, have literally added whistles and bells - as well as cymbals, harmonica, accordion, trumpet, and the list goes on.
Contemporary one man band legends include North Carolina's Jim Garner, Georgia's Jesse Fuller and West Virginia's Hasil Adkins who have all influenced current players such as Bloodshot Bill and Washboard Hank - who Tom tracks down.
Charmed by their inventiveness and talent, Tom visits the one man band festival, an annual event in Montreal where the world's most musical solitary figures perform.
He finds some eccentric characters with rich stories following traditions that stretch way back into British and American folk and blues music. Meeting performers such as Bob Log III, Dana Schecter (also known as Insect Ark) and Spain's ‘Hyperpotamus', Tom learns what it takes to become a one man band.

MON 14:00 Auntie's War by Edward Stourton (b09ltj8g)
1. A War Footing
The BBC is a British institution unlike any other, and its story during the Second World War is also the story of Britain's people.
Writer and presenter Edward Stourton is a sharp-eyed and affectionate companion on the BBC's wartime journey, investigating archives, diaries, letters and memoirs to examine what the BBC was and what it stood for.
In this first episode, Ed describes how the BBC adapted to being on a war footing, the boredom of the Phoney War and the experiences of reporters sent to France.
These were the years when Auntie (the BBC's enduring nickname) earned a reputation for bossiness. It was also a period of remarkable voices - Churchill's fighting speeches de Gaulle's broadcasts from exile, George Orwell, Ed Murrow, Richard Dimbleby and Vera Lynn.
During these extraordinary times, eyewitness testimonies gave a voice to everyone, securing the BBC's reputation as a reliable purveyor of the truth.
Auntie's War is more than a portrait of an institution at a critical time, it is also a portrayal of the British in wartime and an insight into why we have our broadcast culture today.

MON 14:30 In Search of Richard Yates (b01n6sj8)
Nick Fraser argues that the work of Richard Yates should receive greater recognition.
Yates is best known for his first novel, the remarkable Revolutionary Road, which was published to great acclaim in 1961. However, his subsequent books failed to gain the same readership and Yates slowly faded from view. By the time of his death in 1992 he was largely forgotten.
Friends, family and biographer Blake Bailey reveal the stark beauty of his prose, the heart-breaking complexity of his characters, and how his own struggles with alcohol and mental illness informed his work.
Fraser seeks to uncover the mystery of Richard Yates and examine how a a writer so well-respected, loved by his peers, capable of moving his readers so deeply, fell so quickly out of print. He explores the reasons why his work has, in recent years, enjoyed a revival and why his stories sit nicely alongside the public's affection for programmes such as Mad Men.

How We Remember Them
Since 2014 the world has been reflecting on the centenary of the First World War. The atrocities of the conflict have been well-covered but how has our interpretation changed over time?
With powerful accounts of veterans, from the iconic 1964 BBC series The Great War and the Imperial War Museum’s sound archive, as well as moving early commemorations at the Cenotaph, historian Dan Snow looks at how and why our perceptions of the conflict have changed over time, and how that’s affected the way we commemorate the event.
Joined by Dan Todman, Lucy Noakes, Helen McCartney and Jean Seaton, as well as Peter Hart, who interviewed many veterans on behalf of the IWM, we’ll look at why Remembrance still seems to matter to people today and, as the centenary draws to a close, how it might change going forward.

TUE 14:00 Auntie's War by Edward Stourton (b09ltkkj)
2. Wartime Propaganda
In this second episode, Ed investigates propaganda, coded messages sent across Europe, and relaying less than truthful information to the enemy.

TUE 14:30 The Man of the Mani (b05zhl3b)
John Humphrys travels to Greece, to the village of Kardamyli in the Mani, to explore the life and work of travel writer Patrick Leigh Fermor.
Fermor is arguably the most influential travel writer of the 20th Century.
Aged 18 he took off, with notebook in hand, on a walk across Europe. During the Second World War he fought in Greece and Crete, and is still remembered in the country today for his daring exploits with the resistance. His most celebrated action came in 1944 when he led a commando operation to abduct the German General Heinrich Kreipe.
In the early 1960s he moved to Greece, to the Southern Peloponnese. He built a house in the village of Kardamyli in the Mani. It was here that he wrote much of his most celebrated work and where he remained until his death in June 2011.
John visits Fermor’s village to explore the influence that Greece had upon his life and work, and also to consider the impact that he had on the village and the people he lived alongside. He also visits Fermor’s former home, now in the care of the Benaki Museum in Athens, and discusses the plans for its future. He meets those in the village who met Leigh Fermor when he first arrived in the 1960s - a man in his 90s recalls how they “danced on the tables into the night” - and he hears tales of influential guests, great writers like Bruce Chatwin and John Betjeman, even a King and Queen.
Accompanied by Fermor’s book ‘Mani: Travels in the Southern Peloponnese’, John Humphrys also travels into the deep Mani, one of the remotest, wildest and most isolated regions in Greece.

What he doesn't know is that Simon and Danno are hiding in the cupboard with a cake. But finding an appropriate time to burst out cheering proves difficult when Julie comes in with a dark secret she wants to reveal.
Continuing the award-nominated comedy drama set in Alcoholics Anonymous, written by Pete Jackson and inspired by his own road to recovery.
It follows the lives of five very different recovering alcoholics. Taking place entirely at their weekly meetings, we hear them moan, argue, laugh, fall apart, fall in love and - most importantly - tell their stories.

Julie …... Sue Johnston
Danno …... Paul Kaye

Writer Pete Jackson is a recovering alcoholic and has spent time in Alcoholics Anonymous. It was there he found, as most people do, support from the unlikeliest group of disparate souls, all banded together due to one common bond. As well as offering the support he needed throughout a difficult time, AA also offered a weekly, sometimes daily, dose of hilarity, upset, heartbreak and friendship.
Love in Recovery doesn’t seek to represent an AA meeting exactly as it might happen in real life, but to capture the funny stories, the sad stories, the stories of small victories and of huge milestones, stories of loss, stories of hope, and most importantly, the many highs and lows in the journey of recovery.

WED 11:00 The Rudest Man in Britain (m001dxxv)
3. Demons and Fantasies
The Rudest Man in Britain excavates the archives from the perspective of Gilbert Harding - a well-loved radio personality who went on to achieve wider TV exposure as star of long-running panel shows such as 'What's My Line?' once watched by millions.
Clever, amusing and often outrageous, Harding was a familiar voice of wireless who became a pioneer of popular TV. But behind the public persona, there was a troubled and conflicted character.
To create a profile of Gilbert Harding's life and sample his broadcasting work Simon Fanshawe draws on Stephen Wyatt's play Dr Brighton and Mr Harding, in which Harding (played by Roger Allam) wrestles with his inner demons and fantasies, knowing also that he is in increasingly poor health (hence his reason for moving to the coast to embrace 'Dr Brighton').

WED 14:00 Auntie's War by Edward Stourton (b09ltkpj)
3. Remarkable Voices
In episode three, General de Gaulle rallies the French from London and US journalists arrive to report the Blitz.

WED 14:30 Fu Manchu in Edinburgh (b00rt91z)
"Yellow Peril," "Celestial One" and "Devil Doctor": Sax Rohmer's evil genius, Dr Fu Manchu, traded under many aliases, but where was his doctorate from?
"I am a doctor of philosophy from Edinburgh, a doctor of law from Christ College, a doctor of medicine from Harvard. My friends, out of courtesy, call me 'Doctor'." - The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932)
Miles Jupp (also an Edinburgh University alumn) investigates the hidden Edinburgh years of the criminal mastermind who fought a war against Western imperialism after learning his trade in one of the West's most esteemed Universities.
From the novels we can work out Fu Manchu must have studied in Edinburgh in the early 1870s. So what do historical records teach us about his time there?
Back then, Conan Doyle was registered at the University Medical School, studying at the feet of Joseph Bell, the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes. Thomas De Quincey, the English Opium Eater, had died in the city a few years before but the network by which he sourced his laudanum was still intact, brought by Chinese Coolies from the Port of Leith to the drawing-rooms of the New Town. There were Chinese students registered on the matriculation rolls of the University, some of them refugees from the Boxer rebellion, and the seamen's missions and city police reports make it clear that there was a thriving Chinese criminal network in Scotland's capital.
Could Fu Manchu have learned his criminal trade as an undergraduate at the city's university? Could his later dominance of Limehouse in London have been based on the contacts he made with Chinese gangs in Edinburgh? What factual evidence exists to flesh out the experience of the fictional enemy of the West?

THU 14:30 Secrets and Spies: The Untold Story of Edith Cavell (b069wth6)
Former Director General of MI5, Stella Rimington, investigates the secret history of Britain’s greatest heroine of the First World War, Edith Cavell.
For the first time ever, she uncovers startling new evidence that Cavell’s secret escape organisation was not just involved in helping allied soldiers as we've always been led to believe, but was also actively engaged in espionage.
At the start of the First World War, Edith Cavell was an English Nurse in occupied Belgium who became part of a secret underground network helping hundreds of Allied soldiers who were cut off behind enemy lines to get back safely to England.
But in October 1915 after being betrayed, interrogated, and subjected to a show trial, she was executed by a German firing squad. Her death provoked outrage and revulsion throughout the world. The Germans later claimed that she and her network were spies, an accusation that has always been firmly rejected in Britain.
But now on the centenary of her death, compelling new evidence has come to light, never previously seen by British historians, that for the first time allows us to investigate just how far Edith Cavell and her escape network were involved with espionage.
Stella Rimington, the former Director of Britain’s Security Service, travels to Brussels to delve deep into the secrets of the Belgian archives to uncover the real history of Edith Cavell and her escape network.
It’s a story that has remained completely hidden, and some say actively covered up, for almost a hundred years.

Fear! Terror! Gut-wrenching Horror! Arg Arg. Please!
It's 1952, as usual.
Having fired the Dangerous Giant Space Laser at the alien vessel containing his crew, Quanderhorn creates "improved" duplicates of them all as replacements.
Meanwhile the originals - having luckily escaped the blast by triggering the Mercurian metadrive thanks to an astonishingly angry outburst from Guuuurk - find themselves marooned in a strange forest which the Martian deduces is somewhere in the Crab Nebula.
The professor receives a dire warning from his future self, as an ancient alien ziggurat emerges at Piccadilly Circus Tube Station - just by the chocolate machine. He hastens to London to investigate with his new assistants.
Our heroes are slightly surprised when a number 43 bus to Highgate Woods arrives unexpectedly and they race to Piccadilly Circus to confront the professor and their doppelgangers.
But Prime Minister Churchill has plans of his own to deal with Quanderhorn, and summons up his crack Lab Busting bomber squadron.

The Invisible Sibling Problem
Have you reached an age where it seems everything is beginning to annoy you? What should you do if you’re a sibling who is invisible to your family? How do you deal with a one-night stand who’s now ignoring you at the school gates? All these subjects have been sent in by our listeners and are given the Marian and Tara treatment in the latest instalment of their popular advice podcast.
The first series was welcomed by listeners and critics.
"Both are warm and kind enough to not only be funny but also offer genuinely thoughtful, if left-field, advice." (Miranda Sawyer, The Observer)
"Keyes and Flynn are my new favourite double-act." (Jane Anderson - Radio Times)
"I found their compassion endlessly soothing." (Rachel Cunliffe - The New Statesman)

The Young Ones
Sue MacGregor reunites five people who made their names in the ground-breaking TV comedy The Young Ones.
In the early 1980s, the most popular TV comedies were cosy sitcoms like To The Manor Born and Last of the Summer Wine. Live stand-up comedy was largely confined to working men's clubs and seaside resorts. Mother-in-law and Irish gags were still a staple.
But, in the backroom of a Soho strip club, an underground venue called The Comic Strip emerged. The non-sexist, anti-racist but violent and bolshy acts drew a fashionable crowd. Jack Nicholson and Dustin Hoffman were among the stars in the audience.
TV producers drew from the performers they saw there for the casting of The Young Ones. The bunch of loud-mouthed scruff bags thrown together as housemates in grotty, tumbledown digs, really broke the mould.
When The Young Ones was first aired in November 1982, ratings were pitiful. But before long, the show, with its wild slapstick and surreal twists, soon won a dedicated following. Within six months, a second series was on TV and the team had a BAFTA award for their mantelpiece.
Like the British classic Fawlty Towers, the team decided that The Young Ones should only run for 12 episodes. By then, everyone involved had made their name and alternative comedy became the TV phenomenon of the decade.
Sue MacGregor is joined by original Young One Nigel Planer who played depressed musician Neil; Chris Ryan who played Mike "The Cool Person"; Alexei Sayle who played members of the Balowski family; Lise Mayer who co-wrote the series with Ben Elton and her then partner actor Rik Mayall; and Stephen Frost who played a number of roles across both series.

Earthworms
Although Charles Darwin is especially well known for his work on the Theory of Evolution through his seminal work "On the Origin of Species", he also published a lot of his research on earthworms.
Earthworms fascinated Darwin, so much so that his observations led him to believe that they showed marked intelligence. And earthworms fascinate Sir David Attenborough too.
He recalls a visit to Australia to film the giant earthworm and intriguingly used his ears more than any other sense to find them. What did they sound like and what did they look like? He reveals all.

FRI 14:00 Auntie's War by Edward Stourton (b09ltll9)
5. Eyewitness Reports
In this final episode, the BBC's War Reporting Unit comes into being, and correspondent Guy Byam is parachuted behind enemy lines.

FRI 14:30 The Last Post (b06nq1f6)
How did a simple British Army bugle call from the 18th century become a sacred anthem of death and remembrance? And how did it spread to the rest of the world, played at the funerals of Gandhi and Nelson Mandela?
The Last Post started as just one of a couple of dozen bugle calls played every day in a British Amy barracks. Then, in the 1850s, it found a new role, played at soldiers’ funerals and from there it was extended to be used at memorial services for those who had died in conflict.
Gradually, it moved beyond the military, played at the funerals of many who had never been in the armed forces, such as Wallace Hartley, bandmaster of the Titanic.
But it was in the midst of the First World War that The Last Post had its greatest resonance, becoming the obvious soundtrack to remembrance.
Then, as the British Empire dissolved, it was invariably The Last Post that was sounded as the Union flag was lowered for the final time in former colonies across the world.
Somewhat bizarrely, it was played to mark the passing of Gandhi and Nelson Mandela; it is still sounded on both sides of the disputed border between India and Pakistan; it was the accompaniment to funerals for both the IRA and the UDA. And it spread beyond the British Empire, to countries like Portugal and Belgium and to their former colonies.
Now, The Last Post is played in its original incarnation only at the Tower of London, where it is still sounded nightly. But in its role as the music of loss, it has become almost a sacred anthem in an increasingly secular society.
Alwyn Turner tells the untold story of one of the most famous pieces of music in the world.
