5. Understanding
Former Border Patrol agent Francisco Cantu gains a new understanding of the US-Mexican border.
Francisco's memoir about working for the US Border Patrol also tells the personal stories of those who risk all for a better life in the US.
Born to the daughter of a Mexican immigrant, the border is in his blood. His decision to become a law enforcer came after four years of learning about it through policy and history while studying international relations, and the realisation that theory isn't enough. He needs to be on the ground to understand the border in all its beauty, ugliness and danger.
After four years the personal toll leads him to leave the Patrol but when an immigrant friend does not return from a trip to Mexico Cantu is returned to a world which he discovers is impossible to leave behind.
His evocative account is interwoven with reflections on the history, culture, nature and psychology of the border, and is more broadly about life on either side of a boundary, wherever it is.

SAT 02:30 The Business of Film with Mark Kermode (b053zsn5)
Getting to the Screen
In 2014, close to 700 movies opened in the UK.
Blockbusters, franchises, documentaries, debuts, experiments, low-budget indies and beyond.
It's never been easier to make a film and it's said there is an audience for everything. But what is the likely size of that audience?
In the second of a three-part series, film critic Mark Kermode talks to the film financiers and the distributors.
According to the head of Film Four, David Kosse, the film industry is a "break-even business" - the trick is to identify a winner and ensure it's not just a one off. The independent film world - most of the British film industry - spreads the risk of making a film across independent distributors, equity financiers and other tax benefits.
We hear from the BFI, Film Four and BBC Films on what films they are looking to finance.
Since the early days of film, rich outsiders have financed the industry. Now, producers who don't fit the studio model are looking to a multitude of ways to finance their film - from crowdfunding to rich kids with cheque books. Director Shane Carruth tells how he distributed his film Upstream Color himself, road-showing cinema screenings and bringing the film out on Blu-ray.
And with much talk of Video on Demand, what role will Netflix and Amazon play in the future of film?
Marketing is crucial to the life and death of a movie but it remains the one hard cost in moviemaking. The trailer can be of vital importance and we hear what we respond to and what scenes should be left out.

MacDonald's own story and background is remarkable too - illegitimate son, born in Lossiemouth in Scotland, he is remembered as one of the early founding fathers of the Labour party, and a man who bravely spoke out against the First World War.

SAT 09:00 Andrew Maxwell's Hallowe'en Hoolie (b04mlpx7)
The Irish comedian Andrew Maxwell loves Hallowe'en. That's why he's determined to reclaim it from the Americans.
Forget pumpkins, fake fangs and plastic paraphernalia, the origins of Hallowe'en lie in the Celtic feast of Samhain.
Andrew hears from Professor Ronald Hutton about the ancient roots of this celebration which marked the threshold between summer and winter. He quizzes the folklorists Steve Roud and Doc Rowe about the British customs that have grown into trick or treating and fancy dress.
One of America's leading historians of Hallowe'en, Lesley Bannatyne, traces the transformation of traditions as they crossed the Atlantic from Ireland to the New World, and describes how 21st Century Americans have taken Hallowe'en 'haunting' to a whole new level.
The storyteller Clare Murphy frightens the wits out of Andrew with her eerie account of a faerie changeling, and the psychologist Claudia Hammond explains the science behind why so many of us love scary stories. Along the way Andrew tucks into curiously hard 'soul cakes', seeks to predict his guests' fortunes with charms hidden inside barmbrack, and indulges in a spot of spectre-hunting in a London pub said to be haunted by Dick Turpin.
Prepare to be spooked by otherworldly radio archives, including The League of Gentlemen's Ghost Chase.

With a fine cast of supporting players Benny made his show into one of the all-time great radio comedies, portraying him as likeable character, despite being vain, argumentative and a skinflint. It’s classic comedy that stood the test of time.
With Eddie Anderson as the irrepressible Rochester, Mary Livingstone, Phil Harris, Dennis Day, The Sportsmen Quartet, announcer Don Wilson and orchestra conducted by Bob Crosby..
First broadcast on the Columbia Broadcasting System in September 1950.

Les McKeown's Autograph
Fiona has been distant and her boyfriend Simon thinks he knows exactly what’s on her mind. He decides to help her, and believes the best way to start is by casually bringing this private issue up in the weekly meeting. What could possibly go wrong?
Continuing the award-nominated comedy drama set in Alcoholics Anonymous, written by Pete Jackson and inspired by his own road to recovery.
It follows the lives of five very different recovering alcoholics. Taking place entirely at their weekly meetings, we hear them moan, argue, laugh, fall apart, fall in love and - most importantly - tell their stories.
Fiona .….. Rebecca Front
Simon .….. John Hannah
Julie .….. Sue Johnston
Danno .….. Paul Kaye
Andy ...... Johnny Vegas
Writer Pete Jackson is a recovering alcoholic and has spent time in Alcoholics Anonymous. It was there he found, as most people do, support from the unlikeliest group of disparate souls, all banded together due to one common bond. As well as offering the support he needed throughout a difficult time, AA also offered a weekly, sometimes daily, dose of hilarity, upset, heartbreak and friendship.
Love in Recovery doesn’t seek to represent an AA meeting exactly as it might happen in real life, but to capture the funny stories, the sad stories, the stories of small victories and of huge milestones, stories of loss, stories of hope, and most importantly, the many highs and lows in the journey of recovery.

SUN 06:00 The Line Becomes a River by Francisco Cantu (Omnibus) (b09t27rd)
Former US Border Patrol Agent Francisco Cantú worked on a remote spot on the US/ Mexican border from 2008-2012.
He recounts how he tracks down an unending stream of men, women and children who risk all for a better life in the US away from the violent crime that underpins their lives in Mexico. He tells the personal stories of the weary and the spent who he turns backs, and of the many who don't survive the gruelling journey through the vast desert during summer's searingly hot days and freezing nights.
Born to the daughter of a Mexican immigrant, the border is in his blood and his decision to become a law enforcer came after four years of learning about it through policy and history while studying international relations, and the realisation that theory isn't enough.
He needs to be on the ground to understand the border in all its beauty, ugliness and danger. After four years the personal toll is more than he can bear and he leaves the Patrol but when an immigrant friend does not return from a trip to Mexico to visit his dying mother he is returned to a world that he discovers is impossible to leave behind.
His account is interwoven with reflections on the history, culture, nature and psychology of the border, and is more broadly about life on either side of an arbitrary line, wherever it is.
Francisco Cantú's is a Fulbright fellow, and in 2017 he was a Whiting Award winner. Previous recipients of this prize for writers who show great promise include Colson Whitehead, August Wilson and Jeffrey Eugenides.

SUN 11:00 The Moth Radio Hour (m000ydw1)
Out of Step, Out of Place
True stories told live in the USA: Jenifer Hixson introduces tales of outsiders, of being at odds....and moving beyond.
The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.
The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.
Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.
The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.
First heard on PRX in February 2019.

Poetry Please: TS Eliot - The Waste Land
Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Poetry Please: TS Eliot - The Waste Land featuring the groundbreaking modernist poem.
Roger McGough introduces requests for TS Eliot's groundbreaking modernist poem The Waste Land. First published in 1922, the programme draws upon existing recordings of the work by Eliot himself and Ted Hughes, with a recording read by Lia Williams. The effect is to semi-dramatise this extremely influential work which extended the range of the dramatic monologue. Known for its almost deliberate obscurity in places, what the listener hears in this version is instead a clear, intriguing interpretation of the poem, intercutting between the different voices.

SUN 13:00 Adrian Mole: The Cappuccino Years by Sue Townsend (Omnibus) (m0001x1t)
Episode 1
This diary starts in April 1997.
Adrian is no longer a spotty teenager, but a balding 30 year old, recently separated from Jo Jo, the mother of his 2 year old son, William.
On the eve of the General Election, Adrian returns home to Ashby-de-la-Zouch to vote for his local Labour Party candidate, and childhood sweetheart, Pandora Braithwaite. He is working as Head Chef in a restaurant in Soho, where there is tinned tomato soup on the ‘traditional English, no choice’ menu.
Adrian’s literary ambitions remain unrealised, but his career is about to take an unexpected turn and throw him into the limelight. And that is not the only life-changing surprise in store for the hapless yet irrepressible diarist.
The Cappuccino Years highlights how much attitudes have changed in the previous 20 years, and once again showcases Sue Townsend’s fearless and razor-sharp wit.

SUN 14:20 The Second Pan Book of Horror Stories (Omnibus) (b0bqfcpk)
The Pan Book of Horror Stories was a paperback series of short story anthologies first published in 1959.
Early editions were known for their lurid cover art and editor Herbert Van Thal’s pick of stories by new authors alongside classics of the genre. It was credited with introducing a new generation to the horror tradition – back in the 1960s, volumes were handed round in school playgrounds in the same way that kids trade computer games today.
The Second Pan Book of Horror Stories, published in 1962, was considered to be one of the best.
Anita Sullivan has selected five from this edition for her own fresh interpretation in this Omnibus.

Episode 1
Dr Thor Hanson on the nature and necessity of bees.
Bees are like oxygen - ubiquitous, essential and, for the most part, unseen. While we might overlook them, they lie at the heart of relationships that bind the human and natural worlds. Dr Hanson takes us on a journey that begins 125 million years ago, when a wasp first dared to feed pollen to its young.
From honeybees and bumbles to lesser-known diggers, miners, leafcutters, and masons, bees have long been central to our harvests, our mythologies, and our very existence. They have given us sweetness and light, the beauty of flowers and as much as a third of the foodstuffs we eat. And, alarmingly, they are at risk of disappearing.
Read by Elliot Levey.
Abridged in five parts by Polly Coles.
Dr Thor Hanson is a Guggenheim Fellow, a Switzer Environmental Fellow and an award winning author and biologist.
His other books include The Triumph of Seeds, The Impenetrable Forest, Feathers and the illustrated children's favorite, Bartholomew Quill. His writing has been translated into more than ten languages and has earned many accolades, including The John Burroughs Medal, the Phi Beta Kappa Award, the AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prize and two Pacific Northwest Book Awards.

1. The Question of Why
A five-part drama serial about one of the oldest of human diseases.
Malaria has blighted human life in parts of the world for as long as humans have been humans.
The mosquito, the parasite it carries, and the human bloodstream are evolving together. In many places the parasite still has the upper hand. The Question of Why: the first of five dramas based on facts and taking in ancient historical itches and ideas about the disease and the latest scientific attempts to understand and outwit it.
The disease caused by a parasite carried in the saliva of female mosquitoes came to humans probably from gorillas a long time ago. Through recorded history the fever-prompting disease has shadowed humans almost everywhere warm enough for mosquitoes to live between the Poles. We have evolved together.
It is still the biggest killer of children in parts of the world.

Featuring:
* Screen legends Barbara Shelley and Madeline Smith

Holidays
More light hearted verse and comic sketches from Pam Ayres.
The theme this time is 'Holidays'.
Featuring sketches about choosing the perfect swimsuit; holiday one-upmanship, and how you know when it's time to get a bigger cabin.
Pam shares memories of how glamorous flying used to be when she first started to fly in the 1960s; stories about gifts and souvenirs which definitely don't travel, and the saga of buying her first ever wetsuit.
She also performs some new poems including 'Don't Put Me Dinner on a Slate' about the latest pub grub fashion, and three sections from a new linked series of poems called 'Flight Time'.
Inspired by the trials and tribulations of long-distance flying, the first poem is about arrival and check-in, the second about the consequences of the in-flight meal and the third about the delights of the on-board toilets.

Voice in the Machine
Talking technology has surrounded us for over half a century.
From the earliest incarnation of the Speaking Clock to the artificially intelligent personal assistants in our homes, we've slowly got used to sharing our lives with machines that help us with our daily chores.
Who better to guide us through the history of the Voice in the Machine than two of the nation's most familiar voices?
Jon Briggs was the original voice of Siri in the UK - a fact he only discovered while watching a feature on the TV. Emma Hignett's voice is heard on London’s buses and trains, helping people to navigate the capital. Spending the day in a smart home, the duo ask the robo-vacuum to clean the floor, request songs and jokes from personal assistant Alexa, and hop channels with a talking television.
While travelling on a bus and hearing her own voice, Emma shares her own recording tips and tricks. A visit to the local supermarket leads to an encounter with perhaps the most irritating machine voice of all time, with repeated warnings of an "unexpected item in bagging area". As these recognisable voices dig deeper into our history with talking tech, Jon gets a little nostalgic with his own fondness for Knight Rider's talking car, KITT.
Rifling through the archives, Jon and Emma reminisce about their memories of talkative gadgets from fact, fiction and music. In the context of the early archival recordings of talking technology, the voices of today's OK Google, Alexa, Siri and others have come a long way.
But why are our assistants almost all female?
And are they really listening to us all the time?
Join Jon and Emma as they grapple with these questions and their personal connection to the silicon speech that narrates our lives.

Episode 2

TUE 14:15 Lavinia Greenlaw - Five Fever Tales (b03ynf5h)
The Wrongly Named Tree
A drama serial by Lavinia Greenlaw about one of the oldest of human diseases.
Malaria has blighted human life in parts of the world for as long as humans have been humans. The mosquito, the parasite it carries, and the human bloodstream are evolving together. In many places the parasite still has the upper hand. The Wrongly Named Tree: the second of five dramas based on facts and taking in ancient historical itches and ideas about the disease and the latest scientific attempts to understand and outwit it.

TUE 14:30 Tom Ravenscroft's One Man Band (b039cbsz)
With a guitar in hand, harmonica in mouth, cymbals and bells and a big drum strapped to the back, Tom Ravenscroft goes in search of the musical characters who prefer to go solo.
One Man Bands have a surprisingly long history, documented in pictures and writings from France and Spain as far back as the middle ages. Entertaining and enterprising men, they started with a flute and a drum and, over the centuries, have literally added whistles and bells - as well as cymbals, harmonica, accordion, trumpet, and the list goes on.
Contemporary one man band legends include North Carolina's Jim Garner, Georgia's Jesse Fuller and West Virginia's Hasil Adkins who have all influenced current players such as Bloodshot Bill and Washboard Hank - who Tom tracks down.
Charmed by their inventiveness and talent, Tom visits the one man band festival, an annual event in Montreal where the world's most musical solitary figures perform. He finds some eccentric characters with rich stories following traditions that stretch way back into British and American folk and blues music. Meeting performers such as Bob Log III, Dana Schecter (also known as Insect Ark) and Spain's ‘Hyperpotamus', Tom learns what it takes to become a one man band.

Schubert’s B-Flat Piano Sonata D960
The B-Flat Piano Sonata D960, which Schubert completed two months before his death, in 1828, is a vast and complex work. It’s the last of a triptych of piano sonatas that Schubert wrote, possibly in response to the death of his hero Beethoven the year before. Schubert had been a pallbearer at Beethoven’s funeral.
In this programme, pianists Imogen Cooper, Steven Osborne and James Lisney consider what it’s like to play this work. And Andrea Avery and Pamela Rose describe ways in which this sonata has marked and shaped their lives.

The Coat
Julie has a bone to pick with Danno, and Andy has finally met a woman – but she’s not all she seems.
Fiona …... Rebecca Front
Simon …... John Hannah
Julie …... Sue Johnston
Danno …... Paul Kaye
Andy ...... Johnny Vegas
Alice ...... Aimee-Ffion Edwards

Prime Minister Hancock
The Missing Hancocks recreates those episodes of the classic Hancock's Half Hour that have been wiped or lost from the archive.
The first modern sitcom, Hancock's Half Hour made stars of Tony Hancock, Sid James and Kenneth Williams, and launched Ray Galton and Alan Simpson as one of the most successful comedy-writing partnerships in history. But 20 episodes of the show were missing from the BBC archives. Now, after four highly successful series, the final batch of those episodes have been lovingly re-recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC Radio Theatre.
Tonight's episode: Hancock stands for Parliament, with no success whatsoever. But in his dreams he's swept to power on a landslide, and the country salutes......Prime Minister Hancock.
Written by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, and with the classic score re-recorded by the BBC Concert Orchestra, the show stars Kevin McNally, Kevin Eldon, Simon Greenall, Robin Sebastian and Susy Kane. Prime Minister Hancock was first broadcast on the 31st May, 1955.

2. Face to Face with John Freeman
"My doctor tells me if I go on drinking and smoking like this I shall drop dead - so I am going to double it". Simon Fanshawe continues his investigation through the archives to reveal a picture of this clever, amusing and often outrageous broadcaster who had a deeply troubled and unhappy private life. He was lonely, yet could not bear the thought of sharing his life with anybody. There is no evidence that he had a close relationship with a man or a woman. Writer Brian Masters remembers staying with him as a young man. "If I had a bath he would come in and hand me a towel and that seemed pretty innocent to me at that age. I could see that it gave him pleasure, so why not?"
This edition includes an extract of GIlbert Harding on the television show What's My Line hosted by Eamonn Andrews - where he competed with fellow guests Isobel Barnett, David Nixon and Barbara Kelly.
Interviews with Gillian Reynolds, Jeffrey Richards, Andy Metcalf, Gavin Henderson, Roger Storey and Brian Masters.
It also revisits the BBC Face to Face TV interview with John Freeman, where Gilbert Harding wept on camera when the questioner touched a nerve. Public sympathy for the broadcaster soared after the interview - and then he died on the steps of the BBC after recording Round Britain Quiz, eight weeks later.

Episode 3

WED 14:15 Lavinia Greenlaw - Five Fever Tales (b03ynts4)
What the Doctor Saw
A drama serial by Lavinia Greenlaw about one of the oldest of human diseases.
Malaria has blighted human life in parts of the world for as long as humans have been humans. The mosquito, the parasite it carries, and the human bloodstream are evolving together. In many places the parasite still has the upper hand. What the Doctor Saw: the third of five dramas based on facts and taking in ancient historical itches and ideas about the disease and the latest scientific attempts to understand and outwit it.

1. Inspiration
Dr Cathy FitzGerald presents series two of lessons in creative writing made from archive recordings of great novelists, poets and playwrights talking about their craft.
In the first of three episodes:
Lesson One - Find your Story
Inspiration isn't always a divine spark; often an idea has far more prosaic origins. In this lesson, we hear how the speaking clock inspired Beryl Bainbridge, how Roald Dahl's children tricked him into creating James and the Giant Peach, and how Ray Bradbury found a story in a pair of tennis shoes.
Lesson Two - Listen Up!
Tips on developing an ear for dialogue, featuring an archive recording of the New York poet and writer Grace Paley reading her warm and funny story The Loudest Voice.
Lesson Three - A Workshop with Allen Ginsberg
How often do you get to take a creative writing lesson from one of the Beats? In this extraordinary recording of a lecture given in 1982, American poet Allen Ginsberg explains what he learned about writing from novelist Jack Kerouac.

THU 14:30 The Botanical Vicar (b01qlhjf)
The Reverend Charles Edward Shaw was known by many monikers - The Laughing Vicar, The Weed King of the North or, more popularly, Vicar Shaw.
Whatever the name given, Reverend Shaw was loved by both parishioners and naturalists alike for his unusual botanical rambles and fun-loving manner. Every week, friends would climb in his latest jalopy and head off to explore a piece of waste land - that's if they hadn't been kept awake by his home-made speaking clock which boomed hourly from the church tower.
Vicar Shaw was renowned for finding exotic and unusual plants at rubbish tips, factory dumps, sewage treatment sites and other unlikely places. Some of these finds might be plant life unfamiliar to the local area; others botanical foreign invaders, mysteriously appearing from the Middle East, the Americas, or Eurasia.
In a celebration of his life, work and passions, Lancashire born poet Lemn Sissay returns to the North-West and joins the priest's former protégé, radio and television gardener Roy Lancaster. Together they visit sites where Roy and the Vicar would scour for exotic plants, catching up with mutual friends along the way, and sharing memories of Roy's friend and mentor. They take in an unlikely set of locations: the ultra-modern Reebok Stadium, home to Bolton Wanderers Football Club; a former sulphuric acid works at Nob End near Bolton; Gallery Oldham, where collections and items relating to Vicar Shaw are still held; and Waterhead in Oldham, the last parish and final resting place of Vicar Shaw where his self-designed memorial window can still be enjoyed.

Prompted by the pine-fresh fragrance of zoo keeper Amelia's new perfume, adventure journalist Jane is reminded of a story her uncle Norman once told her about a rare midnight orchid found only in the Guatemalan jungle. This is no ordinary flower, but one that gives off a scent with such aphrodisiac properties it makes the person wielding it utterly irresistible.
That's more than enough to convince perennial singleton Lucy that it is high time they all headed to South America. There follows a roller coaster ride of an adventure taking in waterfalls, crocodiles and a gang of ruthless drug smugglers. But our heroes remain unbowed.
Each and every challenge thrown at them is met head-on with courage, determination and deeply inappropriate footwear.

The Quanderhorn Xperimentations
The Splattered Remains of Undentifiable Organs Incident All Over Again
It's still 1952. It's always 1952.
The Quanderhorn crew find themselves on Advanced Lunar Station Q, with no means of returning to Earth and limited oxygen supplies.
Splitting into two teams after a game of Martian Closey-Eyesie, Guuuurk (Kevin Eldon) and Troy (Freddie Fox) fall prey to a ravenous Lunar Man Trap, while Brian (Ryan Sampson) and Gemma (Cassie Layton) stumble upon an intact space craft.
But there are two problems. Gemma's ear is unwinding, rendering her emotionally unstable, and there's no apparent entrance to the craft.
Having rather astonishingly escaped their various dilemmas, the crew encounter yet another conundrum - how exactly is the ship powered?
Jenkins (John Sessions), the professor's factotum, detects a spacecraft approaching Earth which Quanderhorn (James Fleet) orders him to blast out of the sky, apparently unaware his own crew is aboard.

Has your husband suddenly become boring? What should you do if you’re invited to a swingers party - or, perhaps more pressingly, if you’ve not been invited? Can holiday romances ever work out – even ones in Switzerland? All these subjects have been sent in by our listeners and are given the Marian and Tara treatment in the latest instalment of their popular advice podcast.
The first series was welcomed by listeners and critics.
"Both are warm and kind enough to not only be funny but also offer genuinely thoughtful, if left-field, advice." (Miranda Sawyer, The Observer)
"Keyes and Flynn are my new favourite double-act." (Jane Anderson - Radio Times)
"I found their compassion endlessly soothing." (Rachel Cunliffe - The New Statesman)

Together, these two friends have been through a lot, and now want to use their considerable life experience to help solve the biggest - and smallest - of their listeners' problems.
From dilemmas about life, love and grief, to the perils of laundry or knowing what to say at a boring dinner, we’ll find out what Marian and Tara would recommend - which might not solve the problem exactly, but will make us all feel a bit better.
Recorded in Dublin with emails received from listeners around the world, the hosts invite you to pull up a chair at their virtual kitchen table as they read and digest their inbox.

Episode 5

FRI 14:15 Lavinia Greenlaw - Five Fever Tales (b03yqwhg)
Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up One's Sleeve
A drama serial by Lavinia Greenlaw about one of the oldest of human diseases.
Malaria has blighted human life in parts of the world for as long as humans have been humans. The mosquito, the parasite it carries, and the human bloodstream are evolving together. In many places the parasite still has the upper hand. Emergency Prescriptions Kept up One's Sleeve: the last of five dramas based on facts and taking in ancient historical itches and ideas about the disease and the latest scientific attempts to understand and outwit it.

FRI 14:30 The Business of Film with Mark Kermode (b054pbwz)
The Business of Showing
Mark Kermode considers the business of showing films in the last of three programmes.
The route from script to finance to screen can be a long one - but then it all comes down to one nervous opening weekend.
Marketing may convince us of a film's merit but, one comment on social media can ruin even the most inventive campaign.
Film festivals are vital for launching a film. The Autumn festival season is where artistic creators battle for the first showing of the most talked about films. For many independent film makers exposure through awards is seen as a crucial - or perhaps only - means of survival. The artistic director of the Toronto Film festival reveals how film makers plead with him to admit their films.
The decline in DVD sales has led to nearly a halving of studio profits. Vincent Bruzzese runs a research entertainment firm and believes there is a disconnect between the film makers and the audience. By analysing data, it's possible to work out why a certain scene works. Hit on certain story tropes and a film will do well.
Netflix and Amazon's are all about giving customers what they want. Their algorithms are set to challenge the studios' dominance. How long is it until the streaming services become major studios themselves?
Meanwhile, the growth of cinema multiplexes have paved the way for boutique cinemas and the notion of the film as an event. Audiences today are engaging with films in very different ways, so how do UK cinemas make most of their money?
