SAT 02:30 When Van Played Cyprus Avenue (b06d2g8z)
"And I'm caught one more time
Up on Cyprus Avenue..."
Van Morrison made a number of references in his songs to the east Belfast neighbourhood in which he grew up - none more directly than in Cyprus Avenue from his 1968 album Astral Weeks.
Romantic images of leaves shaking on a tree, rainbow ribbons in a young girl's hair and a mansion on the hill evoke memories of Cyprus Avenue in the years before Van left Northern Ireland to pursue his career in the USA.
Cyprus Avenue - with its intricate arrangement of flute, harpsichord and strings - was recorded in New York, far from the well-heeled, tree-lined avenue along which the young Van would pass on his way home to the working class area of Hyndford Street. This was in the years before the Troubles. East Belfast was steadfastly loyalist and protestant.
When the arts broadcaster Marie-Louise Muir moved into the area, she was already aware of the iconic quality of street's name - not just from Van Morrison's song, but from the fact that the Reverend Ian Paisley lived on Cyprus Avenue. Marie-Louise was a Catholic ‘blow-in’. So, when Van announced that he'd be celebrating his 70th birthday by playing a gig literally feet from her front door, she was curious to see how the community would respond.

Episode 2
'It was tempting to think, at times like this, that some bizarre hysteria had gripped the British people.'
Jonathan Coe's novel is a comic yet poignant look at Britain in the run up to Brexit as Prime Minister David Cameron rolls the dice on the EU Referendum.
Beginning eight years ago on the outskirts of Birmingham, where car factories have been replaced by pound shops, and London, where riots give way to Olympic fever, Jonathan Coe's novel follows a Britain through a time of mind-boggling change.
There are newlyweds Ian and Sophie, on either side of the Referendum debate; Doug, the leftwing journalist who writes about austerity from his Chelsea townhouse, and his radical teenage daughter who will stop at nothing in her quest for social justice; Benjamin Trotter, who embarks on an apparently doomed new career in middle age, and his father Colin, whose last wish is to vote to leave the EU. Through these lives is the story of modern England: a story of nostalgia and delusion; of bewilderment and barely-suppressed rage.

Mother Tongue - Double Takes
Globe-trotting poetry series, presented by poet Imtiaz Dharker.
In this episode, Imtiaz hears poets from Poland, Cuba and Taiwan - in their original language and in translation. Starting with the phrase Double Takes, she reflects on how these three poets have the knack of making their readers look, and look again, at the world around them - shifting perspectives with their idiosyncratic takes on details and experiences.
Imtiaz speaks to Adam Zagajewski, widely considered to be the leading Polish poet of his generation. He writes with great humanity and wry humour, with the ability to elevate the most ordinary things, such as airports and sandals, to epic levels. He takes a walk around his home city, Krakow, and talks about his approach to writing poetry. With poems from his collection, Asymmetry, translated by Clare Cavanagh.
We also hear poems from Legna Rodriguez Iglesias, an up-and-coming Cuban voice, now living in Miami. Her intense and sometimes unnerving work often has an absurdist focus on close-up details. Cedar is in a high security maternity hospital. Both her families join forces to plan a break-out.
Omnibus of the last five episodes of Louise Erdrich's ten-part tale.
The world is in crisis. Evolution has gone into reverse, affecting all creatures great and small, including the next generation of humans. Fewer babies - or their mothers - are surviving to full term and, of those babies born, many have been identified as belonging to a more primitive species of human. As governments take drastic action to limit the catastrophe, there has never been a more dangerous time to be having a baby.
Cedar Songmaker is pregnant. She is the adopted daughter of Minneapolis liberals. Determined to find out as much about her baby's make up as possible, she makes contact with her birth family on the Ojibwe reservation.
Despite increasing levels of panic across the country, Cedar sets out to meet her birth mother for the first time.
American author, Louise Erdrich lives in Minnesota. Her novel The Round House won the National Book Award for Fiction. She's also received the Library of Congress Prize in American Fiction, the prestigious PEN/Saul Bellow Award for Achievement in American Fiction, and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize.

SUN 15:30 Hollow Earth: A Travel Guide (b05q4zmk)
Comedian Robin Ince takes us on a tour of a world beneath the earth's crust, exploring the history of Hollow Earth theory through literature, legend and scientific theory.
His tour of this world within a world, starts with the obvious question of how to get into it. Is the entrance at the North Pole, the South Pole or even in Newcastle?
With the help of his "tour guides", including the graphic novelist Alan Moore, Robin gets advice on where to descend and what he might see once he gets down there.
Is this a Dystopia full of desperate souls, or the Utopia imagined by someone like the messianic 19th century physician Cyrus Teed, who established a hollow earth cult in Florida and whose ideas later went on briefly to inspire the Nazis.
On his subterranean journey, Robin also meets a classicist, a biblical scholar, and a literary critic. Together they explore the physical aspects of this world and consider who he might bump into.
Will it be the three-headed dog Cerberus, or the plesiosaurs and dinosaurs of Jules Verne? Or is this voyage into the interior, actually just a journey into the depths of our own minds?

To Put It Another Way
Roberta’s networking as Michael’s part-time, unpaid manager is finally paying off, and she is beginning to get her husband some serious industry traction. She lines up an audition for the prestigious topical panel show, To Put It Another Way. Unfortunately, this lands Michael in a bear pit of bullying stand-up comedians who are used to the gladiatorial nature of these shows. Encountering a bitter, aggressive stand-up is enough to put Michael off being a comedian for good.
As the restructuring process at work comes to a climax (being re-interviewed for the job he already has) Michael is at a very low ebb. Feeling like a comedy failure after acting as a punch bag at the panel show run through, he is now certain he is for the chop.
In spite of the battering he received in front of an audience at the TV run through, he receives encouragement from stand-up comic Natalie Duke, who gives Michael an idea that might change everything. Could he really could give up the day job?
Roberta is pushing Michael hard to take the plunge and use the platform his Room Next Door following has created to forge a comedy career, with her as his full-time manager, of course. But it seems that she is far more keen to ditch her secure day job than Michael is, especially when his boss at the kitchen worktop company delivers his plan to reorganise the company.
Will Michael take the plunge? Will Roberta take the plunge? Will you take the plunge and give it a listen? It’s the last episode so plunge into the other three first and then plunge into this one as the series reaches a satisfying conclusion that also leaves everything open for another series.

The Phoney War
Edward Stourton tells the story of the BBC in the ”phoney war” of 1939-1940 and the period’s strange echoes of Covid-19.
When war was declared in September 1939, everyone in Britain expected a catastrophic bombing campaign. Theatres and cinemas were closed and children were evacuated to the countryside. What followed instead was a hiatus when tensions remained high but the bombs did not fall. How does the experience of the Home Front at the start of the Second World War echo the Covid-19 crisis and what did it mean for the evolution of the BBC?
The corporation’s initial response became known as the "Bore War". The BBC was berated for broadcasting dreary music and endless, highly repetitive news bulletins. It then changed tack to find a more popular voice, in tune with the needs of its audience. How did it become a trusted source of news in the face of wartime censorship? What did it do to cheer up the nation and enliven public service messages about health and education?

Dylan met Dave Van Ronk in the store, and Izzy Young produced Dylan's first concert at Carnegie Chapter Hall in 1961. Dylan wrote a song about the store and Young called "Talking Folklore Center".
After developing an interest in Swedish folk music at a festival, Young closed his New York store and in 1973 he moved to Stockholm where he opened the Folklore Centrum, where he still works seven days a week.
Making a rare return to New York, 40 years since he first left, Izzy joins Seth on the steps of 110 MacDougal St in Greenwich Village - the site of his original Folklore Center – to reminisce about the evocative days in the late 50s and early 60s when, as Bob Dylan recalls, "Folk music glittered like a mound of gold".
Wandering up MacDougal Street to Washington Square Park, Izzy describes the events of April 1961, when `Folkies' staged what would later be referred to as `the first protest action of the 60s'. When city officials tried to ban folk musicians from performing in the square, Izzy was the main organiser of a protest that resulted in clashes with local police. The protestors eventually won their legal battle with the city and music has been permitted in the square ever since.

THU 14:30 The Unsent Letters of Erik Satie (b036thyn)
Alistair McGowan travels to Paris on the trail of his musical hero, the visionary Erik Satie - now most well-known as the composer of the Gymnopedies. Satie was famously eccentric - he replaced traditional musical directions like 'ralentando' and 'fortissimo' with instructions to the musician such as, 'While watching oneself approach' and 'like a nightingale with a toothache' and in order to save time deciding what to wear every day, he bought seven, identical, yellow, corduroy suits - one for every day of the week.
Satie's radical new approach to music was initially dismissed by the musical establishment, but he was to prove a highly influential force in the new French music of Debussy, Ravel and anticipated 20th century minimalism.
As Alistair talks to Satie biographers and musicians, he uncovers the story of Satie's one and only love affair, with the artist Suzanne Valadon. Their affair lasted only six months, but years later, after Satie's death, bundles of unsent letters to Suzanne were discovered in Satie's apartment.
Featuring interviews with Robert Orledge, Ornella Volta and Jean-Pierre Armengaud.
Translations of Ornella Volta's interviews were voiced by Philippa Stanton

The Quanderhorn Xperimentations
It's Eating My Face
England 1952. A time of peace, regeneration and hope. A Golden Age. Unfortunately, it's been 1952 for the past 65 years.
Meet Professor Quanderhorn, a maverick scientific genius with absolutely no moral compass. Assisted by a rag-tag crew - his part insect son, reputedly a "major breakthrough in Artificial Stupidity"; a recovering amnesiac; a brilliant scientist with a half-clockwork brain; a captured Martian hostage and a sinister factotum. FRI 07:30 Now You're Asking with Marian Keyes and Tara Flynn (m001cwtx)
The Hot Tub Problem
Does being shown baby pictures in the supermarket drive you up the wall? Has someone given you unsolicited advice about your weight? What should you do if you’re invited to try out a neighbour’s hot tub but you’d really rather not? All these subjects are given the Marian and Tara treatment in the latest instalment of their popular advice podcast.
The first series was welcomed by listeners and critics.
"Both are warm and kind enough to not only be funny but also offer genuinely thoughtful, if left-field, advice." (Miranda Sawyer, The Observer)
"Keyes and Flynn are my new favourite double-act." (Jane Anderson - Radio Times)
"I found their compassion endlessly soothing." (Rachel Cunliffe - The New Statesman)
Marian Keyes is a multi-award-winning writer, with a total of over 30 million books sold to date in 33 languages. Her close friend Tara Flynn is an actress, comedian and writer. Together, these two friends have been through a lot, and now want to use their considerable life experience to help solve the biggest - and smallest - of their listeners' problems.
From dilemmas about life, love and grief, to the perils of laundry or knowing what to say at a boring dinner, we’ll find out what Marian and Tara would recommend - which might not solve the problem exactly, but will make us all feel a bit better.
Recorded in Dublin with emails received from listeners around the world, the hosts invite you to pull up a chair at their virtual kitchen table as they read and digest their inbox.

FRI 14:30 The Crying Game (b01qnv2h)
Geoff Watts investigates why we cry and the peculiar purpose of tears.
Although many animal species cry vocally, the production of tears in response to emotion, both happy or sad, is a trait unique to humans. So why do we cry, and what could the evolutionary advantage be to producing tears in response to joy or despair?
The science on this topic has been surprisingly sparse until very recently, but now new research seems to be shedding some light on some common preconceptions about the effect and consequences of our tears. Does having a good cry make you feel better, for example, or do women really cry more than men? Researchers in Israel have even discovered that our tears may contain hidden messages triggering surprising responses in those who come into contact with them.
Geoff Watts gets the tissues ready as he investigates everything you ever wanted to know about weeping.
