SAT 00:30 And the Academy Award Goes To... (b071h07x)
Series 6

Slumdog Millionaire

Somewhere between Bollywood and Hollywood, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ captured the heart of the world, and 8 Oscars in 2009.

Paul Gambaccini tells the gripping story of the low budget independent production that got lucky.

He talks to some of those central to its creation, from Vikas Swarup, the Indian Diplomat who wrote the original novel, co-director Loveleen Tandem, who helped persuade the studios to let the child actors speak Hindi, and Resul Pookerty, whose magical soundscape of India won him an Oscar and changed his life for ever.

It's a film which took a city, a child of the slums, and a game show – and turned it into a star-crossed romance; a film which snuck past the infamous Foreign Language category and into the mainstream Best Picture category at the 81st Academy Awards - despite being at least 20% Hindi.

Winning 8 Oscars, the film had no star actors, but a cast of millions - the city of Mumbai. The real star name was Danny Boyle, a director who, according to screen writer Simon Beaufoy, discovered in Mumbai a city ‘like the inside of his head’ - vibrant, frenetic, dazzling, and full of extremes.

It nearly went straight to DVD, but rose again to take Oscar after Oscar, from under the noses of studio films.

Paul Smith of Celador Productions, describes how his company, who invented the game show, “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire”, got lucky a second time - winning a Best Picture Oscar.

Producer: Sara Jane Hall

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in February 2016.

SAT 02:00 The Female Persuasion by Meg Wolitzer (b0b3g009)
Episode 10

Greer Kadetsky is a shy college student in Connecticut when she meets Faith Frank, a dazzlingly persuasive and charismatic activist who has been a pillar of the women's movement for decades. The meeting is made more resonant since she has just been the victim of a sexual assault on campus.

As Greer moves into her independent adult life Faith is to become her mentor figure, someone she looks up to and respects, until she is forced re-evaluate.

Cory visits Greer in New York. Greer raises her voice. Meg Wolitzer's witty novel about power and influence.

The Female Persuasion by Meg Wolitzer is a book written before the recent seismic shift in American politics and the advent of the #MeToo movement, but it illuminates the complexities of what it is to be a young woman coming of age in the early decades of the 21st century. As well as the relationship between Greer and her role model, the story explores how a young man copes with devastating loss and attempts to rebuild his life, and poses searching questions about feminism and the painful realities of love and loyalty.

Writing in The New York Times Review Of Books, Lena Dunham described how "the novel ...deserves to be placed on shelves alongside such ornate modern novels beginning in college as A Little Life, The Secret History and The Marriage Plot... But when all is said and done, Wolitzer is an infinitely capable creator of human identities that are as real as the type on this page, and her love of her characters shines more brightly than any agenda."

Meg Wolitzer is author of The Interestings, The Uncoupling, The Ten-Year Nap, The Position, The Wife, and Sleepwalking.

The ASMRnswer

"My question is about something I became aware of at a young age," explains Samantha Richter from Cambridgeshire.

"I was sitting on the carpet at school, being read a story by the teacher. My hair felt as though it was standing on end as waves of a tingly sensation washed over my head. I subsequently found certain scenes in films had this effect, when actors were talking softly, or someone was having their hair brushed."

"Then, a few years ago, I discovered that there is a name for the tingles, it's called ASMR. My question is, what is ASMR, and why do we experience it?"

In this episode, we explore the world of Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. It's a trend which has risen quickly on YouTube, with devoted subscribers following their favourite 'ASMRtists' whose videos receive millions of plays.

Hannah speaks to Dr Nick Davis, who published the very first research paper on the phenomenon in 2015. And Adam is put to the test by Dr Giulia Poerio, to see if he is susceptible to the sensation of ASMR. Are there any proven benefits for devoted fans, or is it just a YouTube fad?

We've concocted our very own Curious recordings so you can find out if your brain begins to tingle. You'll find them in our normal podstream, where you can enjoy Adam and Hannah crafting a very ASMRy cocktail for your listening pleasure.

Series 12

Holding On, Digging Out & Hanging Up

True stories told live in the USA: Meg Bowles introduces stories where everyday moments have lasting impacts.

The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.

The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.

Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.

The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

First heard on PRX in 2020.

SUN 12:00 Poetry Extra (m00167xx)
Conversations on a Bench - Derby: Sophie Sparham

Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Conversation on a Bench - Derby: Sophie Sparham. Anna Scott-Brown hears more stories from the people who stop to sit beside her on benches around the country.

In this edition, Anna sits on a bench in the centre of Derby. Throughout the programme, a specially commissioned work by the poet Sophie Sparham draws on the voices of those passing by – and sometimes pausing on – the bench at ‘the Spot’ in the city.

These hidden stories are glimpsed through snatched moments and the painful and beautiful stories people tell Anna in this busy urban setting. One man talks of regaining his hearing after 18 years of deafness, another – a child of Caribbean immigrants - of the pain he feels for the Windrush generation.

Stories of homelessness feature throughout the programme, including one young man who has turned his life around. And there is a final citation to hope, both in Sophie’s poetry and in the contributors who have sat on the bench.

Sophie picks up on some of Derby’s well known figures in her poems, and pays a moving tribute to the city she lives in, while expressing some of the tensions inherent in her love for it.

Hidden lives are revealed, and common threads recur as Anna’s gentle but insistent, and sometimes extremely direct, questions elicit poignant and profound responses from those sitting on the bench.

Presented and Produced by Anna Scott-Brown
An Overtone production for BBC Radio 4

SUN 15:30 Dr Hepcat and the Hepster's Dictionary (b04mcmnl)
In 1938, the singer and band leader Cab Calloway became the first known African American to publish a book and call it a dictionary.

His book of jive talk, Cab Calloway's Hepster's Dictionary, translated some of the lively and inventive slang being used among musicians and entertainers in New York's Harlem, for a new audience of jazz fans who weren't yet 'hep to the jive'.

Poet Lemn Sissay finds out how Calloway, famous for his hit song Minnie the Moocher, came to write the dictionary, and how it became the official reference book of jive in the New York Public Library at a time when black people in America were still highly segregated from the white mainstream.

Lemn speaks to Cab Calloway's eldest daughter Camay Murphy who remembers Harlem in the 1930s and 40s, and Cab's grandson Christopher Calloway Brooks who is a bandleader himself.

Jive grew out of older African American vernaculars which had their roots in slave plantations in the 19th century. As people came up from the southern states to the northern cities to look for work, jive developed around the world of jazz music, entertainment and night life in Harlem. It was a private 'in the know' language, a form of protection and a way to get past the authorities, but it was also fun and incredibly creative.

Some words survive, like hip, chick, groovy, dig, cool and beat. Other jive terms may no longer be in use - like collar to comprehend, pounders for policemen, or a rug cutter for a good dancer - but the words of jive remain a revealing portrait of Harlem in its heyday.

This is a memoir about that fateful decision, but it's also about the ethics of meat eating in the modern age, and whether we should know, respect and even love the animals we eat.

At its heart, this book is a love story, exploring Jacqueline's increasing attachment for her particular pigs, and celebrating the enduring closeness of humans and pigs over the centuries.

Burger, Burger, Burger, Burger, Burger

The return of more shop based shenanigans and over the counter philosophy, courtesy of Ramesh Mahju and his trusty sidekick Dave.

Set in a Scots-Asian corner shop, the award winning series returns with all the shop regular characters, and guest appearances along the way, from the likes of Sean Biggerstaff, Mina Anwar, Greg McHugh and Simon Greenall.

In this opening episode, we pick up on Dave's relationship with his best friend Lesley. Does Dave see a future in the friendship, and what does Lenzie think of his blossoming bromance?

Join the staff of Fags, Mags and Bags in their tireless quest to bring nice-price custard creams and cans of coke with Arabic writing on them to an ungrateful nation. Ramesh Mahju has built it up over the course of over 30 years and is a firmly entrenched, friendly presence in the local area. He is joined by his shop sidekick, Dave.

Then of course there are Ramesh's sons Sanjay and Alok, both surly and not particularly keen on the old school approach to shop-keeping, but natural successors to the business. Ramesh is keen to pass all his worldly wisdom onto them - whether they like it or not!

Episode 2

When Jacqueline Yallop moves to south-west France with her husband, she embraces rural village life and buys two pigs to rear for slaughter. But as she gets to know the animals better, her English sentimentality threatens to get in the way and she begins to wonder if she can actually bring herself to kill them.

This is a memoir about that fateful decision, but it's also about the ethics of meat eating in the modern age, and whether we should know, respect and even love the animals we eat.

TUE 14:30 My Pakistani Jazz Orchestra (b04n31w6)
Izzat Majeed could have retired quietly, but instead he formed the Sachal Jazz Ensemble and built a music studio in Lahore.

The London-based father of three was born and brought up in Lahore. He recalls a vibrant city full of music and culture. When he was a child, Pakistan's film industry -nicknamed 'Lollywood' - produced 100 movies a year.

He recalls seeing the Dave Brubeck Trio playing in the city as part of America's Jazz Ambassadors Tour. This was the start of a lifelong affection for jazz. As the years passed, a less culturally tolerant society took shape in Pakistan. Izzat was extremely disheartened by this. Lollywood all but disappeared and the classical musicians at it's heart disappeared with it.

They had to make ends meet in any way they could, and music was no longer a way to do this. When Izzat retired, he decided to do something about it. The Sachal Jazz Ensemble was born.

Brunel University

A funny and dynamic quiz show hosted by Steve Punt - this week from Brunel University with specialist subjects including Politics, Theatre and Computer Science and questions ranging from La Dame Aux Camelias and XOR gates to wardrobe malfunctions and Axl Rose.

The programme is recorded on location at a different University each week, and it pits three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in an original and fresh take on an academic quiz.

The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the Highbrow and Lowbrow round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, sport, and quite possibly Justin Bieber. In addition, the Head-to-Head rounds see students take on their Professors in their own subjects, offering plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both sides.

Other Universities featured in this series include Merton College Oxford, Dundee, Hertfordshire, Sheffield and Newcastle.

Series 21

Nkosi Sikelel iAfrica

Nkosi Sikelel iAfrica (Lord Bless Africa) is a song that runs through the very soul of South African life.

It was originally composed in 1897 by Enoch Sontonga, a Xhosa clergyman at a Methodist mission school near Johannesburg who is said to have been inspired by the melody of John Parry's 'Aberystwyth', a hymn that would've been shared by Welsh missionary's at that time. It went on to travel the African continent but most significantly it became one of the defining symbols of a united South Africa - a country that still holds this song at it's heart.

Having travelled through the country's Christian congregations it soon rang out from meetings and protest rallies throughout the apartheid era eventually becoming the unofficial anthem of the ANC (African National Congress Party). At a time of great hardship and pain, it was a song that offered hope and encouragement to millions of South Africans.

Having being sentenced to life imprisonment, Nkosi Sikelel iAfrica was the song that Nelson Mandela will have heard being sung out by his supporters as he and his fellow ANC members were driven away to Robben Island. Decades later it was the hymn that he would use to unify his country as it was adapted into the South African National Anthem.

Featuring interviews with: Albert Mazibuko of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Lord Joel Joffe, author

Sindiwe Magona, Edward Griffiths - former CEO of South African Rugby during the 1995 World Cup, music journalist Robin Denslow and the Za Foundation's Zakhele Choir.

WED 14:30 Night Visions (b01cwvp1)
A radiophonic journey into the extraordinary world of an aerial crime fighter, peace invader, beholder of night visions and all-seeing eye.

Poet Paul Farley takes a journey into the London night aboard the Metroplitan Police helicopter. From its base deep in Epping Forest the city lights can be seen twinkling in the distance.

Once the crew is scrambled and the helicopter takes off the illuminated metropolis begins to move beneath him as the the Air Support Unit dashes through the air from task to task. Be it searching for a missing person on a railway siding or a burglar hiding in gardens, taking on car pursuits or watching a house well out of earshot whilst an armed unit lays seige, it observes London and its inhabitants through thermal image cameras which turn night into day.

What the naked eye sees, however, is a vision of sublime beauty as the electric city lights up.

Farley reflects on this world of transformation and in his poem, The Asset, the helicopter takes on a life of its own.

Episode 4

When Jacqueline Yallop moves to south-west France with her husband, she embraces rural village life and buys two pigs to rear for slaughter. But as she gets to know the animals better, her English sentimentality threatens to get in the way and she begins to wonder if she can actually bring herself to kill them.

This is a memoir about that fateful decision, but it's also about the ethics of meat eating in the modern age, and whether we should know, respect and even love the animals we eat.

At its heart, this book is a love story, exploring Jacqueline's increasing attachment for her particular pigs, and celebrating the enduring closeness of humans and pigs over the centuries.

In this episode, Ed and Jacqueline are determined to slaughter the pigs themselves so they have a good death.

THU 14:30 Evita's Odyssey (b01l05dq)
When Eva Peron, Argentina's most famous First Lady died in 1952, her body was embalmed. Three years later in 1955, her widower, Juan Peron, was deposed in a coup.

Evita was the most potent symbol of Peronism, and military officers feared her corpse could become a rallying point of protest against the new government. So they stole it. It probably spent time in a van parked in Buenos Aires, the city's waterworks, behind a cinema screen, and in the offices of Military Intelligence. But wherever it stayed, it is said that candles and flowers appeared. Clearly a more long-term solution was required...

In ‘Evita's Odyssey’, Linda Pressly tells the stranger-than-fiction tale of what happened to her body over the next two decades - in Argentina and Europe.

It's an extraordinary story - one that takes in more grave-robbing, kidnap, murder, a revolutionary guerrilla group, and the occult. Through interviews with key players - like the man who repaired the damage to Evita's body when it finally returned to Argentina in 1974 - this programme provides a fascinating glimpse of Argentina before it descended into its darkest and bloodiest days of military dictatorship in the 1970s. It is a story that will stay with you.

FRI 14:00 Big Pig, Little Pig by Jacqueline Yallop (b08xd38g)
Episode 5

In this episode, with Christmas round the corner and guests arriving soon, the time has come to slaughter Little Pig - but the trauma of despatching Big Pig is still fresh in Jacqueline's mind.

FRI 14:30 When Stockhausen Came to Huddersfield (b06pd3bt)
Ian McMillan finds out what happened when the controversial German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen's visit to the 1988 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival nearly ended in disaster.

This superstar of the Avant Garde, who featured on the front cover of the Beatles Sergeant Pepper album, had been shocking audiences since the 1950's with his dazzling compositions.

He was lured to the quiet West Riding mill town for its 10th anniversary festival, because the South Bank in London couldn't provide the rehearsal time and a suitable venue for his composition, Sternklang or 'Star Sound'. The Festival Director Richard Steinitz had promised him the cavernous council owned sports hall for the performance, which was turned into an indoor park for the occasion, complete with Christmas trees and artificial turf.

While setting up for a concert in Huddersfield Town Hall part of the ceiling fell onto Stockhausen's mixing desk and narrowly missed injuring the great man himself. During his visit Stockhausen developed a taste for the local curry house, bought earplugs to get to sleep in the railway hotel and invited local people to get ready for 'visitors from outer-space'. His reputation had gone before him, and he didn't disappoint those who were lucky enough to be there.

The visit put the festival on the map, and has become part of local folklore.

Ian is joined by the writer and broadcaster Robert Worby, the then Festival Director Richard Steinitz, Technical Manager Steve Taylor, musician Peter Britton who trained the student performers, and Jim Pywell who was a music student at the Polytechnic at the time.

FRI 23:45 Bird Island (b01kbjdg)
Series 1

Episode 4

On one hand, Ben is on the trip of a lifetime to Sub-Antartica. On the other, he's trapped in an icy hell with one other person, a dodgy internet connection and a dictaphone. Loneliness is something of a problem. His fellow travelling scientist Graham should alleviate this, but the tragi-comic fact is, they are nerdy blokes, so they can only stumble through yet another awkward exchange. Ben experiences all the highs and lows that this beautiful, but lonely place has to offer but fails miserably to communicate this to Graham. So, Ben shares his thoughts with us in the form of an audio 'log'.

Apart from his research studying the Albatross on the Island, Ben attempts to continue normal life with an earnestness and enthusiasm which is ultimately very endearing. We're with him as chats awkwardly with Graham, telephones his mother and as he tries to form a long distance relationship with a woman through Chemistry.com. In fact, we follow Ben as everything occurs to him. We also hear the pings and whirrs of machinery, the Squawks and screeches of the birds and the vast expanse outside. Oh, and ice. Lots of ice.

In this final episode, Graham gives the shock news that a new member of the team is joining them.

Graham ...... Julian Rhind-Tutt
Ben ...... Reece Shearsmith
Jane ...... Katy Wix

Written by Katy Wix
