SAT 13:00 Archive on 4 (m0001cwc)
Elvis Presley Comeback Special

Paul Morley tells a parallel story of Elvis and America, from the vantage point of the King's finest hour in 1968.

"I've got to do this sooner or later," Elvis says sheepishly, "so I may as well do it now."

And so the 1968 Comeback Special begins: his quiff defying gravity and his leather jumpsuit chafing, as he bursts into an elemental rendition of Heartbreak Hotel. It had been one of his first singles 13 years before, initially recorded when he was still a teenager living in the Jim Crow South at the beginning of rock and roll.

Much had happened in the meantime: JFK, The Beatles, the hippies and Detroit soul. And Elvis had become a different person, depressed, addicted and increasingly irrelevant.

So by 1968, after his stint in the army, the uninspired films and the years of absence from the stage, the Comeback Special was an opportunity to resuscitate Elvis's career, to claw back his status as a powerful, credible force.

And it did, fleetingly. He was fabulous, and his discography is never better showcased than on that day.

But it also marked the point at which it became clear that the King was fragile.

He was 33, a new father, and he would never be this good again.

Paul Morley believes the '68 Comeback Special shows us Elvis at his best. But also that it offers a vantage point from which to look backwards, forwards and outwards to a changing America - remembering where the hillbilly kid had come from and poignantly aware of where he would end up.

The couple moved to Paris when Richard Rogers and his partners won the contract to design the Pompidou Centre. There she learned the importance of seasonality: subsequent visits to Italy shifted her passion to Italian cooking.

SUN 10:45 The Curious Cases of Rutherford & Fry (m000b0bb)
Series 14

A Frytful Scare Part 2

Rutherford and Fry delve into the history of roller coasters in the second instalment of their investigation into why we enjoy being scared.

Amelie Xenakis asks: "Why do people enjoy rollercoasters? I am a thrill-seeker and I am always terrified before riding a roller coaster but I enjoy the ride itself. (I would like BOTH of you to ride a roller coaster if possible)."

Never ones to shy away from a challenge, the pair attempt to channel their inner adrenaline junkies with a trip on one the UK's scariest rollercoasters at Thorpe Park.

They discover the birth of the roller coaster in the 18th century, when Catherine the Great enjoyed careering down Russian Ice Mountains covered in snow. Adam talks to scary sociologist Margee Kerr, author of 'Scream! The Science of Fear', about how the modern roller coaster evolved.

David Poeppel from New York University studies the science of screaming, and we discover what makes screams uniquely terrifying. Plus, psychologist and broadcaster Claudia Hammond describes some early experiments which tested how fear affects our body.

SUN 11:00 Radiolab (m000fnvc)
Series 6

Bit Flip

Radiolab explores how tiny changes can have cosmic effects on us unwitting humans. With Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich.

Back in 2003, Belgium was holding a national election. One of their first where the votes would be cast and counted on computers. Thousands of hours of preparation went into making it unhackable. And when the day of the vote came, everything seemed to have gone well. That was, until a cosmic chain of events caused a single bit to flip and called the outcome into question.

In this episode of Radiolab, we travel from a voting booth in Brussels to the driver's seat of a runaway car in the Carolinas, exploring the massive effects tiny bits of stardust can have on us unwitting humans.

Radiolab is a Peabody-award winning show about curiosity. Where sound illuminates ideas, and the boundaries blur between science, philosophy, and the human experience.

Hosts Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich investigate a strange world.

From WNYC. First broadcast on public radio in the USA in 2019.

SUN 12:00 Poetry Extra (m0014pnt)
Poetry Workshop - The Edinburgh School of Poets

Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Poetry Workshop with Ruth Padel exploring the pleasures of writing and reading poems.

Poetry is everywhere, and all over the country workshops of aspiring poets meet to work together on their craft. The Edinburgh School of Poets is one such group, and Ruth joins them to work on three of their poems on the theme of 'Family Ties'.

Ruth and the group listen to the poems and offer practical and inspirational pointers to each other. As they go behind the scenes of the poems, testing and pruning, exploring technical things like structure, rhyme and line endings, they reveal the imagination and the skill that makes poetry so rewarding for both writers and readers of poetry.

The poems from the group include a tender one about the never ending anxieties of motherhood, which includes some interesting Scottish words like 'stravaiging'. There's also a funny piece about the pre-occupation with genealogy, and a moving poem about an attempt to piece together a picture of a lost family member from their remaining personal effects.

The group also share and appreciate a poem by the award winning poet Don Paterson, called The Thread.

SUN 13:00 Jon McGregor - Reservoir 13 (Omnibus) (b09wv0qd)
Episode 1

A teenage girl has gone missing on a midwinter walk in the heart of England.

As the locals are called up to join the search party and police set up roadblocks, a crowd of news reporters descends on this usually quiet village.

What effect will Becky Shaw's disappearance have on this close-knit Peak District community? And what did happen her?

But as the search for Becky goes on, so does everyday life. Cows must be milked, fences repaired, stone cut, pints poured, beds made, sermons written.

And as the seasons unfold there are those who leave the village and those who are pulled back; those who come together or break apart. There are births and deaths; secrets kept and told; small kindnesses and unanticipated betrayals.

Jon McGregor's Reservoir 13 was one of the most acclaimed and talked-about novels of the 2017.

It won the Costa Novel Award, was shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize, and was longlisted for the Man Booker. It was a Guardian, Financial Times, TLS, Telegraph and Observer Book of the Year.

SUN 15:20 Dylan Thomas: The Beach of Falesa (b042bh3t)
Never filmed screenplay by Dylan Thomas, adapted for radio for the centenary of his birth, and narrated as a 'Film for Voices' by Matthew Rhys.

Wiltshire arrives on an unnamed Pacific island hoping to trade in copra. But an encounter with rival trader Case leads to a macabre wedding. Shunned by the locals, Wiltshire sets out to uncover the secret behind Case's mysterious hold over the islanders, and the truth in the tales of the singing devils living deep in the bush.

Dylan Thomas adapted the short story of the same title by Robert Louis Stevenson to create this screenplay but it was never filmed, despite interest from Richard Burton. It blends some of the wordplay of Under Milk Wood with the brooding mystery of Heart of Darkness.

MON 14:30 Conjuring Halie (b01gvn23)
Cerys Matthews celebrates the life of one of her musical heroines, the great gospel singer Mahalia ("Halie") Jackson, who died in 1972. Jackson became one of the most influential gospel singers in the world at the height of her popularity, inspiring singers like Aretha Franklin and Mavis Staples. But she was also one of the unsung heroes of the civil rights movement in America, described by the legendary historian and broadcaster Studs Terkel as one of the bravest people he'd ever met.

As a child she suffered illness, poverty and deprivation. The Church was her shelter. During the late 1920s, at the height of the great migration, she toured Illinois performing in churches. But it was in Chicago that she made her name and carved out a place for herself as the first professional gospel singer. She refused to sing secular music, a pledge she kept throughout her professional life. Even Louis Armstrong couldn't persuade her to sing jazz with him. By the 1950s and 60s, touring across Europe, she was being described as "the greatest spiritual singer alive." Throughout, she remained a close friend and comrade of Martin Luther King, travelling with him to the deepest parts of the segregated south and often singing at gatherings where he spoke including at the famous march on Washington.

In this programme Cerys talks to gospel singer Vermettya Royster and to the Reverend Stanley Keeble both of whom knew and played with Mahalia. We also hear archive recordings of the historian Studs Terkel talking with Mahalia in the years when they became close friends. We hear from blues and gospel writers Val Wilmer and Viv Broughton. As well as hearing her live performances.

That's Edutainment!

Are the values of education and entertainment truly compatible? Matthew Sweet asks if learning can or should be fun.

When we watch a high-end TV documentary do we learn anything? Or do we simply think we have? With lessons from the archive, this is an hour long look at the links between education and fun.

We attend Radio 4's King Street Junior for a historical re-enactment and go down Sesame Street, an early example of edutainment that worked. A 1970's adult education series called On the Move, with a young Bob Hoskins playing a removal man who has trouble reading and writing, helped enormous numbers of people with literacy problems. It accidentally became cult viewing in the process.

The same cult status was accorded to the first late night Open University broadcasts, although the values of good television and undergraduate teaching initially clashed, sometimes about the appropriate colour of shirts.

In his capacity as academic, Matthew talks to Dr Fern Riddell, whose PhD he supervised. Fern chose broadcasting and writing rather than lecturing or teaching as a career and she explains how injecting historical authenticity into TV dramas like Ripper Street might help us see past eras more clearly, if backed by the right research.

And, with the help of Harvard Professor of Education Meira Levinson, Matthew wonders whether Homer Simpson is an appropriate vehicle for the study of philosophy.

Meanwhile, are some of the ideals of Public Service Broadcasting changing in the digital age? Nowadays the strictly educational programmes like OU material and schools broadcasting are no longer part of the general broadcasting landscape, meaning we're less likely to stumble upon them. Put Public Service Broadcasting into a popular search engine and you might not end up learning about the BBC mission statement, but something completely different.

A Testbed production

Nicola is bubbly and attractive on the outside but behind the door to her flat lies a secret. Inside is full of boxes and boxes of shopping, packed with clothes she has never worn. She is running out of room but she just can't stop and her money is running out.

On the surface Nicola is an enthusiastic outgoing woman who doesn't appear to let life get her down - this is certainly how her friend and neighbour Robin sees her. On the inside however, in her flat, a place where Robin has never been invited, Nicola is a troubled soul. She is lonely and feels worthless and frightened by the world around her. The only thing that picks her up, that gives her the euphoric high she needs to keep going, is shopping.

Nicola's shopping addiction has taken over her flat. Wardrobes, drawers, bags, boxes and suitcases full to bursting. Boxes are stacked up like hedges around the living room, her bedroom and the kitchen, creating a maze of walkways and corridors to get lost in. Nicola never lets anyone in, so no one has any idea of the secret she is carrying around with her. She can't keep her secret forever but what happens when the outside finally finds its way in?

Instead of celebrity Comedy Controllers choosing their favourites, it’s the turn of those who, in their own ways, must take the blame for many of the shows heard on BBC Radio 4 Extra.

The concluding part of their look at the ‘50s and a Golden Age of BBC radio comedy.

WED 14:30 The Art of Litter (b00hr4lh)
For over fifty years, Keep Britain Tidy has been encouraging us to think about our rubbish. Through campaign after campaign they have attempted to shock, amuse and cajole us into thinking about how we dispose of our litter and the consequences of not putting it in the bin.

And yet the detritus continues to pile up and despite the ugliness and potential harm it brings to our environment, it has increasingly become a resource for artists. Going back over 100 years, the likes of Picasso, Dali, Georges Braque and Joan Miro have all used discarded objects in their art and in the last few decades there has been an explosion of artists using 'found objects' in their work to communicate many different messages about waste, consumerism and the dispensability of modern life.

Some artists are campaigners and artists in equal measure. Fran Crowe, for example, creates both installations and engages in performance art with the rubbish she finds on the beaches near her Suffolk home. Others, like Sir Peter Blake, celebrate litter and constantly challenge themselves to create something of aesthetic value from a pile of junk. Whilst sculptor, Gavin Turk [and his stuffed black bin bags and used plastic cups cast in bronze] look for the beauty in objects that have been thrown away

To explore these themes, John Wilson will be talking to the father of Brit-pop art, Sir Peter Blake, to Gavin Turk, one of today's provocative YBAs [Young British Artists], and chatting to Fran Crowe as she walks along the beach collecting the litter she needs for her work.

Why are these artists [and others] attracted by other people's trash?

Series 6

Episode 1

Everyone craves a place where their mind and body are not applied to a particular task. The nearest faraway place. Somewhere for drifting and lighting upon strange thoughts which don't have to be shooed into context, but which can be followed like balloons escaping onto the air.

Late at night, in the dark and in a bunk bed, your tired mind can wander.

This is the nearest faraway place for Patrick Marber and Peter Curran. Here they endeavour to get the heart of things in an entertainingly vague and indirect way. This is not the place for typical male banter.

From under the bed clothes, they play each other music and old bits of BBC Archive. Life, death, work and family are their slightly warped conversational currency.

THU 07:00 The Wilsons Save the World (b09gkk3y)
Series 1

Food

A sitcom written by Marcus Brigstocke and Sarah Morgan, starring Marcus Brigstocke as Mike and Kerry Godliman as his wife Max.

Michael and Maxine Wilson and their teenage daughters, Lola and Cat (plus their bearded dragon Chomsky, and about 150,000 bees) have resolved to live a cleaner, greener, serener life. This is a show about living ethically... whatever that means. Millions of people try every day to make 'good' choices and do the 'right thing', be ethical, charitable and community minded. It's hard. Most of us live with hypocrisy and failure all the time but keep on trying. The Wilsons, good folk that they are, are trying about 20% harder and learning to live with about 19% more failure. They are not giving up.

In this episode a mealtime fraught with anxiety and multiple dietary preferences shows that maybe they all worry a little bit TOO much about food, and have forgotten how to enjoy it. Max and Mike decide to use their time away in Cornwall to leave Jennifer and Phillip in charge of mealtimes and see if the common-sense approach pays off.

Gerald, who worked as production designer on Disney’s 1997’s big screen animation Hercules, examines what motivated Walt to offer his artists’ inkwells as weapons of war. He uncovers why Donald Duck rather than Mickey Mouse became the Studio’s wartime mascot and reveals which film reportedly put Walt on Hitler’s own personal hit list. He also examines Walt Disney’s personal role as a Goodwill Ambassador in South America, intended to help stem potential Nazi influence.

THU 22:30 Phil Wang: Wangsplaining (m00057qs)
The UK is more divided than ever, and no one seems able to agree on anything. What does it mean to be British? To be a man? To be white or “of colour”, gay or straight, young or old, or none of the above? It seems we can’t see the woods for the trees.

What’s needed is a little outside perspective. Enter: Phil Wang – a caustic British-Malaysian comedian who grew up on the island of Borneo. A centrist with a heart; an artist with an engineering degree.

In this pilot episode, Phil turns his attention to the British Empire - was British colonialism really one big crime? Modern liberalism would say so, but Phil’s Dad sure misses those prompt British buses – “I wish they’d come take us over again. Maybe I’d get to work on time!”

Written by and starring Phil Wang

Original music by Fauxe

Produced and edited by Matt Stronge

Today, the ceremony lasts a good three hours, and is attended by everyone who is anyone in film, and is watched on television the world over.

Milos Foreman (Best Director) reveals how the film (Best Picture) reflected his views on the Iron Curtain and how the script (Best Writing, Screenplay Adapted From Other Material) came to influence mental health care in America, while Louise Fletcher (Best Actress in a Leading Role) recalls the experience of working alongside the mixed cast of amateurs and professionals like Jack Nicholson (Best Actor in a Leading Role).
