Bollywood's Shah Rukh Khan's celebration of his personal heroes continues with the leading ladies of his films.

He says he is lucky to have worked with three generations of actresses, it's been "a great learning experience" and that the "heroines have made me the star that I am.

In a male-dominated industry, he thinks actresses deserve the most credit – and talks of stars like Sridevi, "the most beautiful" Madhuri Dixit and "the ever happy and smiling" Juhi Chawla, who were a little senior to him when first they shared screens.

Shah Rukh ponders the next generation of actresses including "the absolutely gorgeous Miss World Aishwarya Rai, my friend and co-actor of many films Kajol, Rani Mukherjee who has the most beautiful eyes in the world, Preity Zinta who's the best buddy anyone can have and Kareena Kapoor who has always given me too much respect".

He also credits leading ladies from the younger generation like "Priyanka Chopra who has always told me that she's a big fan, Deepika Padukone who made me feel that I can still play a lover boy and Katrina Kaif who I'm working with recently."

He reminisces about when he had to dress as a woman for the film Duplicate and how difficult it was in the make-up, wigs and false eyelashes - so difficult that he ended up in hospital for two days after filming!

SAT 02:30 The Beat Women (b06084ks)
The forgotten women of the Beat Generation supported, loved, endured, and were creatively overshadowed by their famous male counterparts. More than just muses, they were often authors in their own right.

Laura Barton travels to New York to meet some of these women.

Writers such as Joyce Johnson, who already had a book deal when she met Jack Kerouac as a young woman, but has seen her long career overshadowed by her brief time as his girlfriend.

Hettie Jones risked everything to defy 1950's convention and her Jewish parents to marry the black poet LeRoi Jones, who later became Amiri Baraka.

Then there are writers such as Anne Waldman, from a later generation to Hettie and Joyce, who learnt from the Beat Generation and aims to keep the tradition alive today.

While in many cases the work of the women of the Beats was not be as innovative as their male counterparts, Laura argues that we should celebrate the writing of the women who fought to forge their own paths, for whom merely telling their story was a struggle.

SUN 12:00 Poetry Extra (m001469g)
Conversations on a Bench - Leeds

Daljit Nagra revists the BBC's poetry archive and selects Conversations on a Bench - Leeds.

Anna Scott-Brown's conversations and chance encounters on a bench in Potternewton Park, Leeds provide the context for Zodwa Nyoni's specially commissioned poem.

Meeting visitors of the Leeds West Indian Carnival, whose home is this very park, along with established and new residents of Leeds' Chapeltown area, Anna uncovers stories of displacement and belonging, of shared space and shared humanity. There emerges a picture of what makes Potternewton distinctive - as well as how it has changed over the years.

The importance of music, heritage and food comes to the fore, alongside racial tensions of the 1960s, 70s and 80s, with experiences of bias that still exists today. The Windrush scandal provides a contrast to the celebration of the West Indian Carnival, and the shocking death of David Oluwale in 1969 following serial police victimisation sits alongside historical accounts of police brutality suffered in this area.

Poet Zodwa Nyoni deftly interweaves her own rhythms into the stories and celebrates the beauty and vitality of this space and its people.

Over the centuries, it's been a dangerous condition to have, so he's continually changed identities and moved from place to place. And he's travelled the world.

Now, in a search for at least the pretence of normality, Tom's back in London, where he attends an interview for a job as a history teacher at a school in Tower Hamlets.

Matt Haig's novel abridged by Jeremy Osborne.

SUN 18:00 Mythos (b0b01jsw)
2. Glamis

Mary Lairre is the ghost of a 16th century French nun murdered at Borley Rectory and rendered corporeal by the mysterious Department.

She's joined by Parker, whose magical abilities rely upon her transforming her entire personality as circumstances require.

Lairre and Parker accompany their boss Johnson to Glamis Castle in Scotland, where a secret door has been discovered.

The door leads into a folkloric dimension, where monster hunter Libby Ward is tracking a dangerous monster and has kidnapped an innocent American tourist to use as bait. Time bends, dimensions fragment and our heroes realise that the monster Ward is hunting may be a lot closer to home than they thought.

Julian Simpson's paranormal drama starring Nicola Walker.

Mythos is a series that looks at British folklore through a quasi-scientific prism. It's laced with sardonic humour, ridiculous situations and insane leaps of logic - but its foundations lie in the stories that have become part of the British cultural DNA over the last 2000 years.

SUN 18:45 Robert Aickman Stories (m0007rfd)
3. The Fully-Conducted Tour

Take off your boots and shoes, and come this way.

Born in 1914, Robert Aickman was the son of architect William Arthur Aickman and worked briefly with his father, a notable eccentric. The younger Aickman was a man of diverse interests (co-founder of the Inland Waterways Association and chair of the London Opera Society included) and did not publish his first stories until 1951, in the collection We Are For The Dark. Half the stories in that collection were written by Aickman and half of them by Elizabeth Jane Howard, his lover at the time.

Aickman would go on to publish 48 “strange stories”, the term he would use for his own works.

Although the grandson of horror writer Richard Marsh, best known for his occult thriller, The Beetle (1897), Aickman never became a full-time writer, but his long-standing membership of the Society for Psychical Research and The Ghost Club is testament to his fascination with the occult, and his mystery stories constantly reshape time in unorthodox ways. Since his death in 1981, his reputation as a writer has grown.

MON 14:00 Believe Me by Eddie Izzard (b08vxt0l)
1. Childhood

When Eddie Izzard was six, she and her brother Mark lost their mother. That day, she lost her childhood too.

From early childhood memories of happy days running with a gang of local kids, doing naughty-ish things in Bangor, County Down, to months of loneliness and isolation at boarding school.

Eddie Izzard has experienced loss in a way that no child should at such a tender age. And this, as well as struggling both with dyslexia and also trying to understand her gender and sexuality issues at a time when they were not openly discussed, leads to a fascinating insight into the early life of one of Britain's most idiosyncratic and cerebral of performers.

Eddie takes us on a journey through her life - one during which she has discovered much about herself along the way, and come to terms with not fitting into the box that most of us like to put people in.

With a nod to the surreal humour and disarming candour of her shows, and some occasional digressions, Believe Me tells the story of a child losing their mother yet who’s risen to become a star of comedy and drama, a leading advocate of total clothing rights, and an extreme runner of marathons.

The Death of Illegitimacy

Illegitimacy once meant you were a 'bastard'. The MP Caroline Flint wants to know what the word 'illegitimate' means now.

Caroline has always been open about her unmarried Mum having her when she was 17 years old and that she had her first son before she got married. Caroline describes her own family's story as a Catherine Cookson novel. There are suspicions that her widowed great-grandmother had an illegitimate child. Her grandmother's older sister had an illegitimate child during WW1 with an American soldier who was brought up as though his mother was his sister.

She explores the archives to find out if the stigma has died out with social historian Jane Robinson and discusses the issue with best-selling crime author Martina Cole and MP Jess Phillips. Martina, who is also an ambassador for the single parent families' charity Gingerbread, became a single parent by choice when she was 18 and then again 20 years later. Jess conceived her son when she was 22 and had been with her boyfriend for barely a month.

Is the biggest deal today not whether a child is illegitimate but whether she bears her father's surname? Has the cloak of illegitimacy really fallen because daddy is willing to say publicly: she's mine?

Gracias a la Vida

Gracias A La Vida - thank you to life - is a song that means a lot to many people around the world.

To the people of Chile where it was written in 1966 by Violetta Parra, it has become an anthem that brings people together in times of trouble.

One man who was tortured and imprisoned under the Pinochet regime in 1973 recalls how playing the song on guitar in prison for other inmates helped keep their spirits and hopes alive under the most brutal circumstances.

Australian writer and actor Ailsa Piper recalls being gifted the words to Gracias A La Vida by a fellow walker along one of the holy routes in Spain, and how the song has become a poignant reminder of the fragility of life.

WED 11:00 The Real Comedy Controllers: The Things That Made Us Laugh (m00147qf)
1. It's That Man Again

Instead of celebrity Comedy Controllers choosing their favourites, it’s the turn of those who, in their own ways, must take the blame for many of the shows heard on BBC Radio 4 Extra.

Between them, Paul Jackson, Beryl Vertue, John Lloyd and Jimmy Mulville have well over a 150 years of gut-busting, side-aching woofers, gags and - let's be honest - the occasional horrific mistimed silence.

In front of an audience in London's iconic BBC Radio Theatre in Broadcasting House - the home of British Radio comedy - they reveal what they do, why they do it and what makes them laugh.

It's back to the wartime stars of Variety and the entertainers, the men and women (though largely men) who entertained us through the dark days of conflict and the drab times of austerity and rationing.

Featuring:

‘ITMA’ - It's That Man Again (Victory Edition).
Tommy Handley's gang celebrate victory in Europe, as broadcast on 10th May 1945.

With an extract from ‘Hi Gang’ and Peter Sellers’ performance of ‘Balham, Gateway to the South’.

WED 14:30 .....But Still They Come (b01pf5cx)
"...But Still They Come' explores the enormous impact and influence of Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of The World's, telling the story of the recording of the original album, the various incarnations produced in the 35 years since its release and the 2012 version, re-recorded for a new generation.

This programme explains how and why Jeff Wayne began working on a concept album based on H.G. Wells' science fiction masterpiece and the years of hard work it took to realise his vision.

In the summer of 1978, the UK album charts were dominated by Disco and Punk, with the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack firmly entrenched at number one. It was an audacious move and a huge gamble to release a double concept album based on a Victorian science fiction novel. But the compelling blend of progressive rock, classical music, Richard Burton's narration and the fascinating story struck a chord with music fans all over the world and the album became a massive hit, supported by the singles Forever Autumn and Eve of the War.

Guests contributing recollections of the part they played in Jeff's creation include David Essex who voiced The Artilleryman and Justin Hayward who sang Forever Autumn. The programme also contains never-before-heard studio interaction with Richard Burton, David Essex and Jeff Wayne during the original recording sessions.

In the years since its release The War Of The Worlds has morphed in to live stage shows, computer games and apps. Now Jeff has re-interpreted the record for a 21st century audience with a new recording featuring Liam Neeson and Gary Barlow (who both contribute to this programme), and Joss Stone.

Sugar

Comedian Simon Evans' series about the economics of some of the goods - or bads - to which we're addicted.

If you crave your daily coffee, can't get by without a cigarette, feel that mid-afternoon slump without your sugar-fix, or can't face an evening without a glass of wine, you are definitely not alone. But have you ever thought about the economics that has made your addiction possible?

Who does it profit? And would you want to make some canny investments that take advantage of our human weaknesses?

Simon Evans looks at the economics, history and health issues behind these oh-so-addictive commodities.

This week it's sugar. Some people say sugar could be the new tobacco - exposed as a health risk that's been knowingly concealed for decades. And the trouble is sugar is in almost everything now - even things that 'look' savoury. What part does economics have to play in how we have got to this point? How do we make sense of what the food industry is doing with sugar? And if we want to invest in this addiction, how do we do it?

With the help of economics guru, More Or Less host Tim Harford and the Queen of investment know-how, Merryn Somerset Webb, plus author David Gillespie, Simon walks us around the economics of this very familiar commodity and pokes fun at our relationship with it.

Presented by Simon Evans, with regular guests Tim Harford and Merryn Somerset Webb.

Written by Simon Evans, Benjamin Partridge and Andy Wolton.

Produced by Claire Jones.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2015.

A sitcom written by Marcus Brigstocke and Sarah Morgan and starring Marcus Brigstocke as Mike and Kerry Godliman as his wife Max.

Michael and Maxine Wilson and their teenage daughters, Lola and Cat (plus their bearded dragon Chomsky, and about 150,000 bees) have resolved to live a cleaner, greener, serener life. This is a show about living ethically... whatever that means. Millions of people try every day to make 'good' choices and do the 'right thing', be ethical, charitable and community minded. It's hard. Most of us live with hypocrisy and failure all the time but keep on trying. The Wilsons, good folk that they are, are trying about 20% harder and learning to live with about 19% more failure. They are not giving up.

In this episode Max needs a holiday and so does Mike but what's the right choice ethically? As they balance the appeal of hot sun versus a carbon-neutral campsite Cat has her own agenda and Lola wrestles with the rights and wrongs of charity.

THU 22:30 Brian Gulliver's Travels (b00zlfh9)
Series 1

Erosia

Brian Gulliver, a seasoned presenter of travel documentaries, finds himself in a hospital's secure unit after claiming to have had a number of bizarre adventures.

This week he travels to Erosia which has a very different view of sexual politics.

Brian Gulliver's Travels is a new satirical adventure story from Bill Dare. The series has attracted an excellent cast led by Neil Pearson and award winning star of the RSC's current season, Mariah Gale. Cast includes fantastic actors Tamsin Greig, John Standing, Paul Bhattacharjee, Christopher Douglas, Catherine Shepherd, Vicky Pepperdine, Phil Cornwell, Antonia Campbell Hughes, Jo Bobin and Katherine Jakeways.

For years Bill Dare wanted to create a satire about different worlds exploring Kipling's idea that we travel, 'not just to explore civilizations, but to better understand our own'. But science fiction and space ships never interested him, so he put the idea on ice. Then Brian Gulliver arrived and meant that our hero could be lost in a fictional world without the need for any sci-fi.

Satirical targets over the series: the medical profession and its need to pathologize everything; the effect of marriage on children; spirituality and pseudo-science; compensation culture; sexism; the affect of our obsession with fame.

Gulliver's Travels is the only book Bill Dare read at university. His father, Peter Jones, narrated a similarly peripatetic radio series: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Written by Bill Dare
Produced by Steven Canny

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in March 2011.

FRI 14:00 Believe Me by Eddie Izzard (b08x9813)
5. Marathons

The idea of taking on unusual sporting challenges appealed to Eddie Izzard – so she took on a gruelling regime of running back to back marathons throughout the length of the UK

In this memoir, Eddie has taken us on a journey through her life - one during which she's discovered much about herself along the way, and come to terms with not fitting into the box that most of us like to put people in.

With a nod to the surreal humour and disarming candour of her shows, and some occasional digressions, Believe Me tells the story of a child losing their mother yet who’s risen to become a star of comedy and drama, a leading advocate of total clothing rights, and an extreme runner of marathons.

Written and concluded by Eddie Izzard.

Director: Lizzie Davies
Abridged and produced by Jill Waters

FRI 14:30 Calling Hereford (b00mwrh9)
For the last thirty years, staff at the world's largest earth satellite station in Herefordshire have watched global news unfold - immediate, raw and unedited. The fall of the Berlin Wall, the British task force landings on the Falklands and the collapse of the Twin Towers - journalists from across the world have beamed their pictures to Madley. Decades before YouTube and the internet made instant, raw images available, staff here have seen history unfold, often live and uncensored.

In this feature, Hugh Sykes visits the site where many of his own reports from around the world have flashed across the huge bank of television screens. Staff, past and present, recall the images that affected them, and their immediate community. Particularly poignant were the images and information coming in about operations in the Falklands, as some workers have connections with the SAS at nearby Hereford.

Madley has a curious place in the local community. The 32-metre diameter metal monster dominates the local landscape, and moves less than an inch a day as it tracks a satellite 22,000 miles away in the skies above the Indian Ocean. The dish is surrounded by a nature reserve, and the nearby primary school who come to work and play have the iconic dish as part of their school crest. Thirty years ago the site, then Street House Farm, was notable only for a disused airfield, once used to carry Rudolf Hess to stand trial at Nuremberg. But this remote part of Herefordshire was also a sheltered bowl of rock between the Malvern Hills and the Black Mountains - rock strong enough to carry a 300-tonne satellite dish and isolated enough to screen out all electronic background noise.

For Hugh Sykes, this is new territory - a link in the technological chain which has remained invisible and unseen, until now.

Produced by John Byrne.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in September 2009.
