No Country for Old Men

"That is no country for old men," wrote Yeats in the opening line of his poem Sailing to Byzantium.

"I am trying to write about the state of my soul," he later explained.

Since when the phrase has been picked up in a novel by Cormac McCarthy, and a Coen brothers film based on the same book.

But are we any closer to understanding what this phrase means, beyond realising something poignant is at work?

Tibor Fischer, Katharine Whitehorn and Guy Browning all approach the subject with three very different columns about age, experience, and youth.

For Guy Browing this is no longer a country for old men because they've decided that staying young is more to their taste. Katharine Whitehorn, agony aunt at Saga, argues for the creation of a fourth age of man, while Tibor Fischer worries about what has changed more, his world or him.

Starring Hattie Morahan and Julian Rhind-Tutt.

Katrina Lyons was only visiting Cresdon Green, where she grew up, to borrow cash from her parents. But when she tried to return to London, it turned out alien beings known as the Geonin had lowered a force field around the village - refusing to let anyone in or out.

Unfortunately almost everyone in the village is too cowardly, apathetic, polite or stupid to stand up to this alien menace, so Katrina has no choice but to start the resistance movement herself, in the cricket pavilion.

In this episode, the force field around the village is keeping out all the rain, so the villagers can no longer moan about the weather.

Uljabaan realises this means they're moaning about him instead. So he distracts villagers with a cricket match - aliens versus humans - whilst trying to build a device to simulate rain.

Series 6

Untamed & Theft By Finding

The globetrotting, trash-picking, aisle-rolling storyteller is back with more words of wit and wisdom.

* A new story fresh from the pages of The New Yorker, Untamed

* Extracts from his book Theft By Finding, a compilation of diary entries from 1977-2002.

With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America's pre-eminent humour writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.

David Sedaris's first book, Barrel Fever (1994), which included The SantaLand Diaries. was a critical and commercial success, as were his follow-up efforts, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997) and Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000). He became known for his bitingly funny recollections of his youth, family life and travels, making semi-celebrities out of his parents and siblings.

David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premier at the Sundance Film Festival (2013). He has been a contributor to BBC Radio 4 since 1996.

SUN 12:00 Poetry Extra (m00125vl)
A Vision on Peckham Rye

Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects A Vision on Peckham Rye. Levi Roots returns to South London to find out more about his favourite poet, William Blake and uncover the story of Blake's supposed first vision of angels bespangling the branches of a tree on Peckham Rye at the age of "8 or 10".

“Sauntering along the boy looks up and sees a tree filled with angels, bright angelic wings bespangling every bough, like stars.”

When Levi Roots was 15, a teacher read out William Blake’s The Tyger to the class. For Levi, it was a life-changing moment. The singer and entrepreneur had only just learned to read and describes the poem as exploding into his brain the way no words ever had before.

Writers, poets and artists continue to draw inspiration from this idea and we hear from some of them about why Blake, and especially this story, continues to have such powerful resonance.

David Almond, explains how Blake crept into his novel Skellig and why he thinks that childhood imagination is different from that of adults. Chris McCabe has been researching the poetic vibrations of the area across the centuries for a book about the lost poets of Nunhead Cemetery, Cenotaph South, and accompanies Levi on a quest to find Blake’s tree. The filmmaker Sarah Turner recreated the angel incident for her film Public House, about the successful community takeover of a local pub.

The programme includes readings by Peter Marinker, Chris McCabe, Levi Roots, Georgia Peskett, Barnaby Steed, David Almond and the students of Harris Girls Academy East Dulwich.

The choral piece, Criers of Peckham Rye, was for the film Public House by Duncan Macleod and performed by Dulwich Folk Choir and Duncan Macleod. The programme features other extracts from the film Public House made and sound designed by Sarah Turner.

LA BELLE SAUVAGE, read by Simon Russell Beale, is the first volume of THE BOOK OF DUST.

We open in Oxford, at The Trout Inn, with a pot boy named Malcolm Polstead, and the whisper of a mysterious baby girl, hidden at the local convent, in the care of the nuns...

SUN 22:30 Paul Sinha's Citizenship Test (b038n3dh)
3. British Culture

Paul Sinha is proudly British. He also loves a quiz. So you would have thought that the UK Citizenship Test, which newcomers to this country must pass to become citizens, would have been right up his street.

But the questions in the 2012 and 2013 Home Office guides seem either bizarrely easy - "Where is Welsh most widely spoken?" - or infuriatingly vague - "What happened in the First World War?".

So Paul has created his own test, to better reflect the things that aspiring migrants should understand before they can call themselves British.

In this episode, he looks at British culture - newspapers, TV, art and film.

He tests the studio audience on their knowledge, with those that answer incorrectly being deported; he also offers up £10 of his own money to anyone in the audience who can correctly identify an artist that the Home Office think all new immigrants should be aware of.

Written and performed by Paul Sinha.

Getting a music tour on the road is a massive undertaking, particularly if the star has a large entourage.

A big tour can be the size of a small town, and every night it ups sticks and takes to the road again. Just feeding the crew is a military operation, which takes an army of caterers.

So how do they do it?

Having spent over 30 years on the road, Midge Ure is perfectly placed to spill the beans on musicians on tour. As Midge says, it is an incredible thing to be part of but it is also a hermetically sealed bubble, detached from the real world and creating its own reality.

Midge goes backstage into the bizarre world of musicians on tour, to explore how touring has changed since his heyday in the 80s and to meet the army of crew behind the scenes who put the tour together: the roadies, lighting technicians, sound engineers, tour managers, caterers, and the artists themselves.

He hears their backstage tales and finds out exactly what it takes to get the show on the road.

Series 1

All Change

After treatment for Ovarian and breast cancer Chippy, is mad Jill is sad and Terri is definitely dangerous to know!

The road back after cancer treatment can be tricky and full of obstacles. In Bad Salsa, two middle aged women and their younger friend seek to regain their zest for life and love by learning to dance at Bad Salsa, the club where everyone knows your name but no-one knows your prognosis!

Depictions of people with cancer on TV and radio too often follow a standard format; there is the diagnosis, the depression the chemo, then the false recovery followed by the tragic death.

Written by Kay Stonham, Bad Salsa tries to paint a picture at once more hopeful and more in line with survival rates which have improved immensely over the past 20 years.

For many, 'living with cancer' is now their day to day challenge. Our characters have finished their treatment and are in the process of finding their way back to normal life or at least finding a "new normal." Everyday challenges must go on like boring marriages, distracting crushes, troublesome children, difficult workmates and infuriating parents. But their brush with mortality gives them a new perspective.

So do they preserve their pre-cancer status quo or in Terri's words, to say "sod it all" and "go for it!"

Follow the women as they embrace the world of salsa whilst they adjust to life after cancer.

TUE 14:30 78 Revolutions (b010t6pb)
Jenny Hammerton - a DJ of 78s - explores why the old discs are still alive and kicking.

The 78rpm record lasted longer than any other format. Enrico Caruso recorded on 78s and Beatles records were cut on 78s in India in the late 1960s. And for some the old grooves and the heavy shellac discs are still the best. Record collectors swear the sound quality of 78s has never been surpassed and young aficionados are cutting their new pop songs on 78s.

Sound artists and composers meanwhile are drawn to the patina of age that the old records carry in their scratch and hiss and some are making new music out of old noises. In the digital world where music has shrunk to invisible sound files, the wind up gramophone, a metal stylus and a box of heavy aromatic 10 inch discs seem more and more like precious and necessary demonstrations of the reality of things.

TUE 22:30 Susan Calman - Keep Calman Carry On (b09h6k15)
Series 2

Gardening

Susan Calman is the least relaxed person she knows.

She has no down time, no hobbies (unless you count dressing up your cats in silly outfits) and her idea of relaxation is to sit on her sofa playing Assassin's Creed, an hour into which she is in a murderous rage with sky high blood pressure. Her wife had to threaten to divorce her to make her go on holiday, and she's been told by the same long-suffering wife that unless she finds a way to switch off, and soon, she's going to be unbearable.

Susan decided her best bet was to try to immerse herself in the pursuits that her friends find relaxing, to find her inner zen and outer tranquillity.

In her first series, she attempted to ditch the old Susan Calman and attempted to find the new Susan Calm, by watching Cricket; going Hillwalking; visiting an Art Gallery and being spontaneous. She enjoyed these pursuits, but all too soon found herself slipping back into her old ways. So she's trying again.

For starters, she’s taking a trip to the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh to learn about Gardening with Val McDermid, in the hope of one day being able to tell her Euphorbia from Euphoria.

Keep Calman Carry On is an audience stand up show in which Susan reports on how successful she's been - both at relaxing and at the pursuit itself - as well as playing in and discussing a handful of illustrative clips from her efforts. It's an attempt to find out how people find solace or sanctuary in these worlds and how Susan can negotiate her own place in them.

Written by Susan Calman and Jon Hunter.

WED 14:30 August Shines (b04kf8q1)
Lenny Henry travels to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to tell the story of August Wilson, contemporary America’s greatest black playwright.

When Lenny Henry last year won the London Critics’ Circle award for his best-actor performance as Troy Maxson in August Wilson’s ‘Fences’, many admitted they knew little about this great black playwright, whose work brought the lives of working-class Pittsburgh African Americans to Broadway and across the United States.

Although at his untimely death in 2005, Wilson had been living for many years on the west coast in Seattle, his plays and his soul had long remained in the east, in the venerable old steel town of Pittsburgh where he was born and grew up. This summer Lenny Henry travelled to the city of three rivers and many bridges, now slowly recovering from post-industrial gloom, to visit the old, multiracial Hill District, where August Wilson lived as a child, and whose geography and characters run through his plays like the Allegheny River through the city.

In a sequence of ten plays, known as the ‘Pittsburgh Cycle’, Wilson charts the stories of black Americans across ten decades of the twentieth century. Vibrant, real, yet filled with the original African rhythms and spirit that the playwright believed should underpin and shape his works, these plays are a magisterial account of the African American twentieth century.

At the now semi-derelict childhood home, Lenny Henry meets surviving members of Wilson’s family, and encounters those who knew and loved him, like Sala Udin, who helped Wilson in the 1970s set up a powerful black theatre group to tell the stories of the Hill’s residents.

THU 07:00 Meet David Sedaris (b08x9f9t)
Series 6

Of Mice and Men; A Can of Worms

The globetrotting, trash-picking, aisle-rolling storyteller shares more words of wit and wisdom:

* Urban myths, the truth and what it means to be called a liar in Of Mice and Men.

* A Can of Worms, a story about overheard conversations and the right way to eat pie.

THU 07:30 Relativity (m000lh5z)
Series 3

Episode 4

The third series of Richard Herring’s comedy drama, Relativity, builds on the warm, lively characters and sharply observed family dynamics of previous series.

Amid the comedy, Richard broaches some more serious highs and lows of family life. In this series, he focuses on the roller coaster ride of first time parenting, how to maintain a long standing marriage and brass rubbing.

Richard Herring is a comedian, writer, blogger and podcaster and the world's premier semi-professional self-playing snooker player.

Talking to players like Yolanda Charles, Mark King and Guy Pratt, and musicologist Sid Griffin, Mitch discovers how the bass guitar emerged from back of the stage to the front, and into the bright lights of disco and '70s funk.

FRI 18:30 Off the Page (b01jhb3j)
The Garden of Eden

The story of the Garden of Eden in Genesis is perhaps the most influential tale ever told. Its chief components of God, Adam, Eve, the serpent, temptation and a paradise lost still exert a hold on western thinking. But this ancient story has not always been benign in its effects.

Presenter Dominic Arkwright is joined by three experts: novelist Zina Rohan, who talks about her own investigations about what this story has meant, particularly to women in the west; Sean Thomas who searched for where the real garden might have been; and Brook Wilensky-Lanford, whose book ‘Paradise Lust’ described the events of the Scopes Trial of 1925 - the famous clash in Dayton, Ohio between Darwinists and creationists that featured an American presidential candidate who declared his belief that Eve was literally made from one of Adam's ribs.
