Killing Me Softly with His Song
"Strumming my pain with his fingers... Singing my life with his words..."
Killing Me Softly with His Song is a song about the pleasure and embarrassment of being seen.
The feeling that someone has reached into your deepest, most private feelings, and laid them bare. It's a song about a singer, and about what music can do and a love song that feels at once happy and sad.
The song was a huge hit in two different generations. It won Grammy Awards for The Fugees in 1997 and for Roberta Flack in 1974.
Ray Padgett is author of Cover Me: The Stories Behind the Greatest Cover Songs of All Time. He unfolds the layers of the song's history as a famous cover of a famous cover.
Musicologist Nate Sloan explores what the song does harmonically, oscillating between major and minor chords to create a sense of uncertainty and longing.
Lori Lieberman tells the story of the Don McLean concert that inspired her lyrics for the song, that she was the first to record as a young singer-songwriter in 1972.
It's a song that transports Tiff Murray back to the hot New York summer of 1996, when the Fugees version blared out everywhere. For her it was the soundtrack to falling in love while far from home.
It's also a love song for Julie Daley, but now with a sharp edge. Dr Robin Boylorn listened to the Fugees version as a self-conscious teenager and felt a flush of recognition.
Ben heard it the Christmas he first came to the UK from South Africa, played by a busker early one morning in Covent Garden as the first snow he'd ever seen began to fall.
Perminder Khatkar has treasured the song since it played in the delivery room during the birth of her first child.

SAT 00:30 In Search Of Beauty (b00p016j)
Erin O'Connor, whose beauty defies convention, discusses this knotty subject-area. What is beauty?
Where do our ideas about beauty come from? How is our life-experience affected by how we look?
As Erin grew up, she was convinced she was ugly. She would dart across the road diagonally so she wouldn't draw attention to her nose by crossing in front of stationary cars. She was so self-conscious about her flat-chest that she would regularly wear two padded bras.
But one day she was told she was beautiful, scooped up by the modelling industry and presented as the uber-elegant catwalk queen, sought after and richly rewarded.
What did they see in her that she would never have seen in herself? Beauty?
With the help of renowned facial-reconstructive surgeon Professor Iain Hutchison, who has treated people with severe facial disfigurement; and Professor of Children's Literature, Kim Reynolds who has studied the way beauty is regarded in traditional stories, Erin explores various opinions and experiences of beauty.
Erin also goes behind the scenes at London Fashion Week, to an event called 'All Walks Beyond the Catwalk'; it used a wide range of models - both in size and age - as a way to broaden the range of catwalk models used at such influential events.

SAT 03:00 Sandi Toksvig's Hygge (m000qknw)
Series 1
Prof Brian Cox and Zoe Lyons
‘Hygge’ (pronounced hoo-ga) along with ‘tak’ (the word for ‘thank you’ that we learnt from watching Borgen and other Scandi dramas) is one of the few Danish words to have become known to us in the UK.
It’s a word that means comfort, contentment and cherishing the simple pleasures in life. In lifestyle magazines it’s faux fur throws, cups of hot cocoa and scented candles; but to the Danish it has simpler and less commercial roots.
As these cold winter nights draw in after a difficult year of scant comfort, it feels like we all need some hygge and legendary Dane, Sandi Toksvig, will do her best to bring it to you.
Deep in the Danish countryside in her cosy wood cabin, Sandi will explore the concept of hygge and the Danish way of life and welcomes celebrity guests who join her in front of the open fire to explore what brings them hygge.
In this episode, Professor Brian Cox finds comfort in physics, piano playing and mulled wine and comedian Zoe Lyons who would like nothing more than to clear out ditches all day.
Additional material from Simon Alcock and Charlie Dinkin.

SAT 07:30 The King's Painter: The Life and Times of Hans Holbein by Franny Moyle (Omnibus) (m0028b5j)
The extraordinary life of the outstanding artist of the 16th Century.
Hans Holbein the Younger became court painter to Henry VIII and was regarded as a phenomenon in his day for his ability to bring the characters he painted to life.
His famous portrait of the Tudor King was so life like spectators fully expected arms and legs to move. One of his paintings of the dead Christ was so alarming that, when the Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky saw it in 1867, he was so troubled by it that his wife had to drag him away fearing he might have an epileptic fit.
Holbein observed the extraordinary events of his century up close and painted the movers and shakers of the age including Desiderius Erasmus, Thomas More, Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII, as well as the various women lined up to become the wives of the king, such as Anne of Cleves.
He was a contributor to the history of book design as well as designing jewellery, and elaborate weaponry.
With a family in Basel and another in London, his life was as colourful as the times he lived through.

Guy Garvey
Musician Guy Garvey is castaway by Kirsty Young.
Front man of the group "Elbow" Guy's voice and lyrics have helped the band win pretty much every music prize going ... headlining Glastonbury too, and playing at the closing ceremony of the London Olympics.
Yet his image is that of an everyday, low key, unassuming bloke ... except that he isn't, he's penning and performing songs filled with intimacy, optimism and lyricism, that strike a chord with millions of fans.
For a long while his devotees were well versed in the art of delayed gratification - Elbow's debut album was released 11 years after the band members first made music together.
He writes his songs in his journal and has been keeping a diary since he was 14. Maybe it was the peace and calm of the blank page that first appealed - one of 7 kids he says he was brought up:
"in a house full of women that were singing, shouting, arguing, fighting over the bathroom. I'm ruined by these women, spoilt rotten"

Quetzalcoatlus
As Sir David Attenborough explains:
"The biggest animal to fly was not a bird, but a reptile."
It was a Quetzalcoatlus, a pterosaur with at least a 44 foot wingspan. David, a huge fan of palaeontology, is skilled in bringing the past natural histories to life through stories about the discovery of key fossils.
What a creature this "terrible lizard" must have been - big enough to scavenge the bodies of dead Tyrannosaurus and yet able to fly, probably in large numbers. And with a twist so typical of Sir David's writing, he brings this pterosaur to life at the very end.
Written and presented by David Attenborough.

Poetry Workshop - The Thread by Don Paterson
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Poetry Workshop - The Thread by Don Paterson.
Taken from the landmark series exploring the pleasures of writing and reading poems. Presented, in Edinburgh, by Ruth Padel.
Poetry is everywhere, and all over the country workshops of aspiring poets meet to work together on their craft. The Edinburgh School of Poets is one such group, and Ruth joins them to work on three of their poems on the theme of 'Family Ties'.
Ruth and the group listen to the poems and offer practical and inspirational pointers to each other.
As they go behind the scenes of the poems, testing and pruning, exploring technical things like structure, rhyme and line endings, they reveal the imagination and the skill that makes poetry so rewarding for both writers and readers of poetry.
The poems from the group include one about the never ending anxieties of motherhood, which includes some interesting Scottish words like 'stravaiging'.
There's also a funny piece about the pre-occupation with genealogy, and a moving poem about an attempt to piece together a picture of a lost family member from their remaining personal effects.
The group also share and appreciate a poem by the award winning poet Don Paterson, called The Thread.
Producers: Sarah Langan and Sara Davies

The return of the fantasy-based sitcom set in Lower Earth.
The intrepid band of Questers, led by Elven Lord, Vidar, set off once again on their search for the Sword of Asnagar.

Joining Vidar on the Quest is Dean, the dwarf, Penthiselea, an Amazon warrior princess, Sam, the human, and Amis, the Chosen One (formerly Sam's dog who took human form when he arrived in Lower Earth - he alone can wield the Sword of Asnagar that will defeat Lord Darkness).
In this opening episode, the Questers are saved from near certain death by a strong and charming loner, who goes by the name of Byorthnoth the Brave.

MON 08:30 The Shepherd's Life by James Rebanks (b05r0b35)
1. Growing Up
Some people's lives are entirely their own creations. James Rebanks' isn't.
The first son of a shepherd, who was the first son of a shepherd himself, he and his family have lived and worked in and around the Lake District for generations.
It's a life lived according to the demands of the seasons.
Sheep are sent to the fells in the Summer and making the hay.
In Autumn flocks are replenished - followed by the gruelling toil of keeping the sheep alive.
Light-headedness comes with spring, as the lambs are born and the sheep get ready to return to the fells.
Through James's eyes, we see that the Lake District is not a playground or a scenic backdrop, it's a working landscape that needs sheep and its farmers to survive.

MON 09:30 Just So Science (b01ptbx8)
Series 1
1. How the Whale Got His Throat
Vivienne Parry presents the science behind some of Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories, with wondrous tales of how things really came to be.
Rudyard tells us how the leopard got his spots, the camel his hump, the whale his throat and so forth.
But what does science make of these lyrical tales?
For the most part, Just So stories are to be dismissed as the antithesis of scientific reasoning. They're ad hoc fallacies, designed to explain-away a biological or behavioural trait, more akin to folklore than the laws of science.
But on closer inspection, might Kipling's fantasies contain a grain of truth? And might the "truth" as science understands it, be even more fantastic than fiction?
Vivienne meets researchers whose work on some of Kipling's 'best beloved' creatures is helping us to answer a rather inconvenient question: how do traits evolve? Why are some animals the way they are?
So how does the largest creature that has ever lived feed itself?
Howard Roe and Nick Pyenson, discuss the wonders of the whale's "lunge feeding", said to be the largest biomechanical event on Earth.
Excerpts from five of the Just So Stories are read by Samuel West.

MON 10:30 Sore Fingers (b011jvys)
Eavesdrop on banjo mania in Stow-on-the-Wold.
It’s like Billy Bunter with banjos. The unmistakeable sound of American Appalachia.
In this town, Bluegrass enthusiasts pack up their banjos and fiddles for a week of fast and furious music which has become a fixture on the international Bluegrass calendar.
Bluegrass is a relatively recent form of American folk music - made popular in the 30s and 40s by Bill Monroe. The music has its roots in the folk music of Ireland, Scotland and England - taken over with the early settlers and fused with other American influences. But it's made a return journey back across the Atlantic with burgeoning interest here in American Bluegrass and Old Time music.
Every year since 1996 a Summer School and convention for Bluegrass enthusiasts - called Sore Fingers - takes place during the Easter vacation at Kingham Hill school in the Cotswolds.
As the pupils depart for the holiday a new set of students arrives - some with moustaches, all with an instrument and, for five days, the Oxfordshire playing fields and quads echo to the sound of Kentucky. The instruments include banjo, fiddle, mandolin, Dobro and guitar.
It's called Sore Fingers for a reason: the students and the tutors play all day and late into the night.
The talent is prodigious - the fastest picking you're likely to hear this side of Pike County. Amongst the tutors are world class players flown in from America - including banjo player Tony Trischka, flat picker Jim Hurst and Dobro virtuoso Mike Witcher.
Amongst the students there are grizzly beards from Doncaster who've been flat picking and claw hammering for fifty years, alongside teenage virtuosos - including 16 year old Edward Bennett from Cornwall, winner of the Clifftop, West Virginia Banjo competition.
We eavesdrop on a week at Sore Fingers talking to the players about their lives outside and inside the Bluegrass camp: we hear about the history of the music, its revival in England and dip in to some of the classroom sessions.
We hear from the Scouse sheet metal worker who gave it all up to make banjos; the couple who met in the fiddle tutor group and who've been together ever since and the carer sent to Sore Fingers by the council for a respite break who keeps coming back.
All this and some fine, uplifting music.

2. How the Leopard got his Spots
Chemist Andrea Sella and biologist Buzz Baum explain why a leopard could change its spots, thanks to mathematician Alan Turing.
Vivienne Parry presents more science behind some of Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories, with wondrous tales of how things really came to be.
Excerpts from five of the Just So Stories are read by Samuel West.

TUE 10:30 The House of the Windy City - Dance Music's Forgotten Heroes (p041g8vb)
Dave Pearce travels to Chicago to hear how a country traditionally resistant to dance music finally got it.
The US invented it and then ignored it.
Today with electronic dance music estimated to be a $20 billion industry, what do those who started Chicago House in the early 1980s think of this new scene?
House music grew out of black gay clubs in Chicago in the early 1980s.
We meet Robert Williams who started the legendary Warehouse club where the scene got its name. He brought in Frankie Knuckles to DJ and Dave Pearce hears how he would create his own edits to keep the crowd dancing all night.
In Chicago we track down Rocky Jones, founder of DJ International, who put out some of the very first records.
What was his reaction when he found out the few thousand records he put out were driving a cult scene in the UK?
Hear how the sound of Chicago topped the charts in the UK. With contributions from:
The Pet Shop Boys
DJ Marshall Jefferson
DJ Pierre
But in America, a lot of house music wasn't played on the radio because it was viewed as gay music.
As Hip Hop became the dominant musical form, Chicago House was pushed out to the suburbs. DJ Black Madonna takes us on a tour of one of the few remaining house music clubs.
While here in the UK a new generation of house music artists like Disclosure have found an audience and a following. They tour the world playing their own interpretation of Chicago House.

Series 1
4. How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin
Rhinos and horses have much in common. John Hutchinson studies both, but just don't ask to look inside his freezer.
Vivienne Parry presents the science behind some of Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories, with wondrous tales of how things really came to be.
Rudyard Kipling tells us how the leopard got his spots, the camel his hump, the whale his throat and so forth.
But what does science make of these lyrical tales?
For the most part, just-so stories are to be dismissed as the antithesis of scientific reasoning.
Excerpts from five of the Just So Stories are read by Samuel West.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Broadcaster and writer Gyles Brandreth nominates Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as his "Great Life".
Matthew Parris chairs, assisted by biographer Andrew Lycett.
Conan Doyle is best known as the creator of the pipe smoking, deerstalker wearing, Sherlock Holmes.
Yet this irritated him, and he tried to kill off the great detective, only to bring him back by popular demand.
But Conan Doyle was a footballer, cricketer, skier, a campaigner against the Belgian atrocities in the Congo, and most startlingly, a practising spiritualist who also believed in fairies.
The paradox of Conan Doyle's life was that, having invented the most rational, cerebral fictional character of all time, he himself embraced superstition and behaved in ways that caused even his allies to despair of his credulity.
Producer Jolyon Jenkins
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in April 2013.
THU 10:30 Fixing A Hole (b00b1nrb)
The life and times of the great British roadworks, and those who dig and despair of them.
Reporter Sara Parker travels from Cumbria to London via the M25.
She’s seeking those for whom a freshly-dug hole in the road is a wonder and a delight but a source of desperation for road users and dwellers.
Copenhagen Street is allegedly Britain's most dug-up thoroughfare. It's in North London, and is regularly the subject of the attentions of gas, electricity and cable TV folk who just love to trouble its tarmac. Sara hails a taxi cab there, where its driver actually lives and feels the rock-and-roll ride across the patchwork quilt of the capital's roads with an expert's commentary in her ears.
Meanwhile, in the depths of a Lake District winter, Sara goes out on call with the boys from the blackstuff as they try to keep the hilly roads from cracking in the frost and being washed away by torrents.
She joins the men training to dig a decent hole at a hole-in-the-road training centre whose instructor in his spare time loves nothing more than ballroom-dancing the night away while Strictly come digging by day.
And out on the M25, the cones are out in force to protect the workforce from the speeding traffic.

We've Only Just Begun
The Carpenters - brother and sister duo Richard and Karen - were one of the most popular groups of the 1970s.
His outstanding compositions and her stunning vocals created several massive hits including We've Only Just Begun.
Originally written as a TV advert for a bank portraying happy young couples embarking on married life full of hope, they loved it and released it as their third single in 1970. Karen's wistful voice gave the song a melancholy that has long resonated with fans.
After her premature death from heart failure due to anorexia nervosa, the song took on an extra poignancy with lyrics like "so much of life ahead".
Fans tell their stories about the song and how it relates to their own life journeys.
For Professor Karen Tongson (named after the singer), We've Only Just Begun is about growing up in the Philippines where The Carpenters epitomised the American Dream. When she emigrated to the USA, the song became a metaphor for the immigrant experience.
Nomad and writer Jeff Read remembers his childhood in a poor part of Los Angeles brought up by a single mother who eventually died homeless on the street. The song brings back memories of childhood optimism and his longing for a stable family life.
Poet Abigail George recalls seeing a film about Karen Carpenter's life and identifying with the singer's struggles with an eating disorder as she herself had to cope with a difficult family life in South Africa.
Retired policeman John Weiss was reminded of the song when he attended the death of an elderly person at a care home. John looked at the deceased man's wedding photos and was struck by the brevity of life.
The singer Natasha Khan aka Bat For Lashes always loved The Carpenters and recorded her own version of We've Only Just Begun as part of an album where things don't end well for the young bride. Ironically, her version now features in a commercial for a British bank so the song has come full circle.

FRI 10:30 Britain's Black Revolutionary (b00t4q0j)
There are still few black leaders in British political life - but life-long trade unionist Bill Morris finds that as far back as the London of 1848 the son of a slave was leading one of this countries most powerful political movements.
Few of us have heard of William Cuffay, a physically deformed tailor who lived in Soho.
And yet he was notorious in his day, to the extent that the political class of the 1840s dubbed him "the pore old blackymore rogue" as he went on to lead a political movement so powerful that Britain cowered behind its shuttered windows and the massed ranks of its armies.
Just as the thrones of Europe were yet again tumbling to revolution, the 1848 Chartist uprising in favour of democracy and equality in London threatened the status quo in Britain.
History records that an articulate democrat, William Cuffay, emerged as a key organiser of the mass demonstration that faced the Duke of Wellington's army in the demand for the vote. Revolution threatened the capital - but who was the diminutive tailor holding such sway?
Lord Morris follows a predecessor in the labour movement through his fascinating story - from son of a St Kitts slave to political leader, and ultimately into exile at Her Majesty's pleasure in Tasmania.

FRI 22:00 What? Seriously?? (m002899d)
8. Spies, Lies and a Political Prize
In this episode, Dara and Isy are joined by the star of Slow Horses Chris Chung, to learn about the magic of Monopoly - with some diverting conversations about secret smuggling, what it takes to join MI5, and what exactly do MI1, 2, 3 and 4 do?
What? Seriously?? is a new podcast which combines comedy with quirky history, hosted by Dara and Isy who unravel an extraordinary real-life tale each week with the help of a celebrity guest.
The stories are definitely true, but also kind of unbelievable at the same time - the sort of stories that make you go ‘What? Seriously??’ when you hear them, but you resolve to tell them in the pub the first chance you get.
Across the series, Dara and Isy will be joined by I’m A Celeb winner Georgia Toffolo, the Aussie comedian Rhys Nicholson, the broadcaster Stuart Maconie, Master Chef star Louisa Ellis, Miles from The Traitors, the comedian Richard Herring, the astronaut Helen Sharman, and Slow Horses star Chris Chung.
‘What? Seriously??’ with Dara Ó Briain and Isy Suttie and special guest Christopher Chung.
Format co-developed by Dan Page. Story compiled by Gareth Edwards and Dan Page.
Producer: Laura Grimshaw
Executive Producer: Jon Holmes
