Ólafur Arnalds: Series 2

Music from the heart feat. JFDR

Join Icelandic composer and pianist Ólafur Arnalds for another unique musical adventure to seek out that all too elusive feeling of calm.

For this episode, Ólafur shares music from the heart with a selection of soothing songs related to love. Music is often the way that people express their love for others, whether romantic, platonic or familial, when we don’t have the words to describe it. Ólafur shares heart-shaped tracks from Sandrayati, Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou and Kjartan Sveinsson, and reflects on his own relationship with music and the matters of the heart - “every song that I’ve ever made has been for love”.

Plus, the Icelandic singer, songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist JFDR selects her sonic safe haven - the piece of music that brings her ultimate calm. She chooses a track by a friend of hers that transports her to a certain time of her life, that is both meditative and meaningful for her.

MON 23:30 The Sleeping Forecast (m002cq8t)
Go on a sleepy voyage with British birdsong and gentle classical music

Take a sleepy voyage of flight across five integral bird habitats: reedbeds, coasts, farmland, woodland, and bogs. This journey features recordings from BBC’s Springwatch team, accompanied by gentle classical and ambient compositions from BBC Introducing artists, as well as excerpts from Radio 4’s Shipping Forecast, celebrating the season of the dawn chorus and the fledgling nest.

We start our voyage at a feathery margin along the water’s edge, amidst the rustle of swathes of reeds in the reedbed, with the sound of the willow warbler, and bittern. We travel to the cliffs, rocky shores, and shingle beaches of the coast, hearing the calls of the rock pipit, oyster catcher, and Manx shearwaters, along with the beach surf and the sounds of the sea from a clifftop vantage point.

Our voyage turns back inland, to the flower-rich grasslands and green fields of farmlands, where we hear the calls of the owl, chaffinch, and skylarks. We move among the cool shade of gently rustling leaves from oak, ash, hazel, and beech trees in British woodland. We hear the songs of whitethroats and redstarts, as well as the sounds of the song thrush and blackbird. Finally, we journey to the squelchy, muddy wetland bogs and boreal forest habitats, hearing the churring of nightjars, willow warblers, and snipe.

Ólafur Arnalds: Series 2

Calm sounds for sunsets feat. James Acaster

Join Icelandic composer and pianist Ólafur Arnalds for another unique musical adventure to seek out that all too elusive feeling of calm.

In this episode, Ólafur creates a soothing soundtrack reflective of one of the most inspiring times of day - sunset. His home of Iceland is famous for its eternal darkness during the winter months, but Ólafur prefers to see this as an eternal sunset - when the sun barely rises in the darkest of winter, the whole day is dusk. He plays songs to soundtrack this feeling of eternal sunset, with music from Meredith Monk, Nkeiru Okoye and Oliver Coates.

Plus, Ólafur’s favourite comedian James Acaster selects his sonic safe haven - the piece of music that brings him ultimate calm. James picks a track that has brought him calm for nearly twenty years, one that he always returns to for its vivid soundscape of diving guitar lines and evocative electronics. These eventually morph into a forlorn indie song that tells a story of love and nature, while you close your eyes and drift away…
